Formed in 2006, Vampire Weekend is a band out of Brooklyn New York. The members of the band met while attending Columbia University. They self-produced their first album after graduation. They gained a great deal of attention mainly due to a variety of music blogs such as Pitchfork and Stereogum. They draw most of their influences from both African popular music and Western classical music, describing their genre of music as "Upper West Side Soweto". Contra is the band's second album.
Beach House "Norway" from their new album Teen Dream in stores now. Beach House is an American pop and indie rock duo formed in 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland, consisting of France-born Victoria Legrand and Baltimore native Alex Scally. Legrand is the niece of French film composer Michel Legrand and singer Christiane Legrand. Their self-titled debut, Beach House, released in 2006 was a huge success in the world of indeopendent music. The group's influences include The Zombies, Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Big Star and Chris Bell. Teen Dream is their 3rd studio album.

Girls "Laura" from their new self titled album in stores now. An indie rock band from San Francisco, Girls has gained quite the reputation on the indie scene mainly due to the band's lead singer, Christopher Owens, who is a former member of the Children of God cult.
Laura Veirs "Wide-Eyed, Legless" from her new album July Flame in stores now. Laura Veirs is an American singer songwriter that grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Veirs has said that she didn't seriously listen to music until she was in her 20s. She listened to what she was mainly exposed to such as folk, country, classical and pop music around the house and on the radio during her youth. Laura attended Carleton College in rural Minnesota and eventually started an all-female punk band called "Rair Kx!". In school she studied geology and Mandarin Chinese. After college, she went back to her roots embracing older country and folk music. Her first journey into the world of songwriting began with a geological expedition in China, where she served as translator. She was miserable and immersed herself into writing lyrics as a way of coping. Seven albums later Laura has become a strong figure in the world of independent music with fans such as Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Veirs lives in Portland, Oregon where she teaches guitar and banjo when she is not touring. July Flame is her seventh studio album.
Moby "One Time We Lived" from his new album Wait For Me in stores now. An American DJ, singer-songwriter, and musician, Richard Melville Hall is better known by his stage name Moby. According to Hall, his middle name and the nickname "Moby" were given to him by his parents because of an ancestral relationship to Moby Dick author Herman Melville. Moby became a successful artist on the ambient electronica scene, and achieved eight top 40 singles in the UK during the 1990's with his hugly successful release Everything Is Wrong. In 1999 he released the critically acclaimed album Play. Play became a commercial and cultural phenomenon, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and was named the biggest-selling electronica album ever. AllMusic considered Moby "one of the most important dance music figures of the early '90s, helping bring the music to a mainstream audience both in the UK and in America. Wait For Me is Moby's 9th album.

Sad Brad Smith "Help Yourself" from the new soundtrack for the film Up In The Air in stores now. From the Up In The Air Soundtrack, Chicago-based musician Sad Brad Smith's song, "Help Yourself", is featured during a pivotal wedding scene in the film. It's an acoustic tune that is a perfect fit for the movie's melancholy mood. I'm betting this might be nominated for the Best Song category at this year's Academy Awards.
GIRLS opened for Phoenix last year and I am appalled by how many radio stations r adding them to their playlist. Why? The songs are so weak, both lyrically and instrumentally. Given the economic background of this band, any hint of angst sounds fake. Its like Miley Cyrus singing about boyfriends. Very disappointing given there are so many other amazing bands in the world of music. Welcome to plastic rock. Puaaaaggghhh.
Thanks for the update, Melanie. I appreciate the heads-up on music I haven't yet heard, at least so far. Just another reason to like the Current, I guess.
