Friday Coffee Break: Fictional Musicians

(updated below)

Since we were talking this morning with MPR's Movie Maven Stephanie Curtis about Crazy Heart, the new film starring Jeff Bridges as a country music star who's career is nearing its end, we got to thinking about fictional musicians - artists or bands depicted in movies or TV shows who aren't real. You know, like Stillwater, or Crucial Taunt. We bet you can think of a couple additional examples. Get creative and help us put together a set for today's 9:30 Coffee Break.

Update: This was a tough assignment we set up for ourselves (regarding how easily we'd be able to track things down, that is), but here's what we came up with from your requests:

1) The Sleaze Sisters (from Times Square), "Damn Dog"
2) Spinal Tap, "Stonehenge"
3) The Monkees, "Mary Mary"
4) The Carrie Nations (from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) "Sweet Talkin' Candy Man"
5) The Partridge Family, "I Think I Love You"

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - The Origin of Love

Posted by Isaac | January 15, 2010 9:07 AM

Perhaps a bit unlikely, but how about Hedwig and the Angry Inch?

Posted by Becca | January 15, 2010 9:07 AM

How about Bowie (or Ziggy Stardust) doing Five Years

Posted by Ryan | January 15, 2010 9:08 AM

That Thing You Do - The Wonders (That Thing You Do)
Would love to hear Fever Dog - Stillwater (Almost Famous)

Posted by Chai T | January 15, 2010 9:08 AM

Well, Spinal Tap, of course (Stonehenge would be great) but everyone will probably request them.

How about The Stains (from Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains) starring a Teenage Diane Lane and Laura Dern along with members of the Clash and the Sex Pistols...

or the band from Heathers that did the big hit song in the movie (i think it was called Teenage Suicide (not the Unrest song)...

Two words-Ziggy Stardust. Greatest fictional musician EVER. PERIOD. "Star" perfectly encapsulates everything that Ziggy is about...PLAY IT!

"That Thing You Do" - The Wonders

"A Kiss At the End of the Rainbow" - Mitch and Mickey (from A Mighty Wind)

Fun theme!

Any of the songs from the groups in A Mighty Wind (Mitch and Mickey, The New Main Street Singers or the Folksmen)

"Somebody Kill me Please" - Robbie Hart from the Wedding Singer

Sugar High from Empire Records

Steel Dragon (Rock Star) -- if it helps, the song "We All Die Young" is originally/actually performed by the band Steelheart.

Posted by Kevin | January 15, 2010 9:10 AM

The Rutles (great fake-Beatles band/mockumentary starring Monty Python and SNL folk) -- I recommend "Cheese and Onions" or "Let's Be Natural."

Posted by Shaun | January 15, 2010 9:10 AM

Love the Hedwig suggestions. What about Clam Dandy? You say, "I've never heard of Clam Dandy." It was Gina Gershon's band in Prey for Rock & Roll.

The Gorillaz - Every Planet We Reach is Dead
Spinal Tap - Stonehenge

Posted by Martin | January 15, 2010 9:11 AM

The Lone Rangers "Degenerated"

But of course, how silly could I be?

Posted by Chad | January 15, 2010 9:12 AM

That Thing You Do - The Wonders, or from the same movie, Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters.

Steel Dragon from Rockstar.

Wild Stallions from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Killer Tofu - The Beets, from the cartoon Doug.

http://www.fakebands.com/

Is a GREAT resource.

My request was Jet Screamer's "Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah" (Jetsons).

Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mahem (Mupper Show)
The Way-Outs (Flintstones)
The Monkees- and if there's an obscure song from the movie "Head".. Yeah, don't play it. ;)
The One-ders (Oh-needers)... but The Wonders are already played on the radio by the local sacharine rock station.

Jesse and the Rippers?

OH THE RUTLES!! Great call on that. Play anything from them.

Posted by Ryan | January 15, 2010 9:14 AM

Dukes of the Stratosphear, "Vanishing Girl." Best choice imaginable for this because the song only occupies, what, 75 seconds?

Posted by John Gasaway | January 15, 2010 9:14 AM

Mark Wahlberg 'sings' "Colorful" in the execrable movie "Rock Star," but it's really a tune by Brian Vander Ark of The Verve Pipe, who appears in the flick as well. Play that please, if you can find it!

Posted by Emily | January 15, 2010 9:19 AM

How about some Dewey Cox?

Posted by ryan | January 15, 2010 9:20 AM

I was just about to request 2gether.. But I had already sent a request through the direct link. wouldn't be fair to bombard them more than they have been.

If you like math songs, do a search fo "Finite Simple Group (of Order Two)"
