There's a new act on the rise for spring of 2010 called Broken Bells. Who are they you ask? The band is made up of none other than James Mercer of The Shins and Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). Danger Mouse had always been a huge fan of The Shins and sought Mercer out to collaborate with. The two began recording in Danger Mouse's Los Angeles studios in March of 2008 soon after finishing his work with Beck on Modern Guilt and soon after the dramatic reconfiguration of The Shins. But do not be fooled into thinking this is a Shins side project produced by Danger Mouse, or a one off Danger Mouse collaboration. Both Mercer and Danger Mouse want you to know that Broken Bells is a band and will be recording as a band.
I've heard some of the tunes a few months back when our Sony record label representative paid us a visit and I must say it was stunning music! We can't wait to play it for you here at The Current! There's nothing leaked to listen to yet on the web but you can sign up for updates as they become available on their website here.
If you are chopping at the bit and just can't wait to hear what these two have been brewing, there have been some strange advertisments circulating on the web that feature a shadowed picture of them both and ads that link to various URLs that are anagrams of "Broken Bells," such as http://www.oebkenllbsr.com/, http://www.berobrknells.com/ and http://www.ebbelkslorn.com/. Various samples of the Broken Bells tracks are featured on these sites and you can loop them by hitting your refresh button over and over. You'll be able to get a taste and sense of what Broken Bells will sound like.
Stay tuned to our music blog for more up to date news as we get it for this super star collaboration!
