Wednesday Coffee Break: Ones and Zeroes

What the hell was this decade called anyway? Many have opted for "the Oughts," while some have suggested "the Two-Thousands." Then there's the "Naughts," the "Oopses," or just "the decade from hell." Then there's the whole debate over when a decade - or century, or millenium - actually begins. On the "zero" year, or the "one" year? Jill and I are of the mind that a decade begins with the changing second-place digit, and a zero in last place (you know - "the 60's.")

Any way you slice it, we've got zeroes and ones on the brain today. Let's play some songs with either "one" or "zero" in the title. We're tired from all the debating on this topic, so getting creative is your job!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero
Smashing Pumpkins - Zero
There's like a billion songs called "One". Pick one.

One city pages article dubbed this decade "the oughties" early on - 02 or so. I thought it was cute, and it irritated a co-worker friend just enough that I kept on pushing it, long enough that it finally stuck with just about anyone I talked to regularly.

100000% support Andy's suggestion of The Humans are Dead. Binary solo? Come on, you can't beat that! It was the first thing that popped in my head.

Seeing as there was no year "0", the decades are as follows:

1-10
11-20
21-30
31-40
...
1991-2000
2001-2010
2011-2020

So technically the decade doesn't end this year UNLESS you say the first decade was a fluke and only was 9 years long. But it's kind of a silly argument, considering it's basically all arbitrary (like just about every measure of time we have... why 24 hours in a day? or 60 minutes in an hour? or why does the year start on Jan. 1st, instead of the equinox or solstice?). Lots of biblical scholars say Jesus was probably not born in year 1 anyway.

5 to 1 - The Doors
1 way or another - Blondie

Cero y Uno by Cafe Tacuba.

Posted by Gabe | December 30, 2009 9:30 AM

Robots by Flight of the Conchords (listed as Humans are Dead by other people). There isn't a one or a zero in the title but there's a whole binary solo in the song where they repeat 00010110101.

BONUS TRIVIA!!!!!
On New Years Day, it will be 010110 which is binary for the number 22. So I guess we could say happy 22 instead of happy new year.

I work in health care which is not retail. I love your music but hollier than thou djs are such a turn off. The decade ends tomorrow. Thats my two cents

Posted by Ramon | December 30, 2009 9:34 AM

We can celebrate the end of the "Aughts", the beginning of the "Teens". Every decade has a name. Celebrate turning a new leaf.

Posted by Justin | December 30, 2009 9:39 AM

One thing that always was interesting to me is birthdays. Technically, the day you were born is birthday #1, but your first year. You then celebrate your 1 year birthday (as in1 yr old) on your SECOND birthday... so when you turn 50 you turn 50 on your 51st birth-day!

What are we supposed to call the 2000's?

Call them the oh-ohs. As is 00. Or as is uh oh, cause there was plenty of that the past ten years.

Posted by Jason | December 30, 2009 9:48 AM

one day, bjork

Teens- the word is representative of ten.

Here's a funny concept- humans had two less fingers, we'd all be using base 8. Except, there wouldn't be a number 8.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,10

I don't know why that was worth mentioning.

Posted by Justin | December 30, 2009 9:54 AM

What do we call the decade? I agree with the spirit of Jason and the words of Seel - The Decade from Hell, both personally and as a country. Here's a cheer to the joys and wonders awaiting us in the new year! Happy New Year ya'll!

Posted by Allyson | December 30, 2009 9:56 AM

Jill is partially correct. the decade does end in 2010, only at the end of the year 2010.

people, come on, are we smarter than this or what?

decade #1 is year 1 thru 10. therefore, the 1st decade of this century is 2001 thru 2010. and the 2nd decade starts at the END of 2010. thus, 2011-2020.

Posted by Mike | December 30, 2009 10:02 AM

What we celebrate on your birthday is the anniversary of your birth, and that's the word used in French and some other languages. Or, if you prefer, you celebrate the number of years you've survived, which was a big deal back when child and infant mortality was measured in double digits.

As for decades, I doubt anyone would argue that "the sixties" didn't start in 1960, or that 1960 was the last year of the 1950s. It has been 10 years since the calendar turned to 2000, so I think it's fair to say that Jan. 2010 is the start of a new decade, even if logically that would mean that once upon a time there should have been a "year zero" that doesn't show up in history.
