Jim McGuinn spent a few days filling in as well. Here are the "Jim Picks" for the week.
Thursday: Donovan, "Barabajagal" (1969)
This tune, "Atlantis," finds our Scottish friend waxing eloquent about the impact and demise of the great continent of Atlantis in spoken word from, before breaking into an achingly beautiful endless Hey Jude-esque chorus that wraps up the tune. Certainly an unlikely candidate for the charts, but this was actually his last hit, from 1969, and a possible inspiration for Spinal Tap's "little people of Stonehendge."
Friday: Ramsey Lewis, "Mother Nature's Son" (1968)
Pre-dating the Fab Four's own use of that newfangled Moog Synthesizer, cocktail jazz guy Ramsey Lewis used the Moog and some tasty electric piano on his White Album covers album. Weirder than the typical Ramsey Lewis set, it's a delightful detour from the artist most known for being part of "The In Crowd." We played the cover of "Cry Baby Cry."
