For their third full length release, the Arctic Monkeys turned to one of their favorite frontmen to help produce the album, Josh Homme from the Queens of the Stone Age! Hailing from a suburb of Sheffield in the UK and formed in 2002, the band currently consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals). Having won both the Mercury Prize in 2007 and Best British Group for the Brit Awards in 2007 and 2008, the Arctic Monkeys have been positioned to be one of those legendary UK bands along side bands like Oasis.
Brendan Benson "Don't Wanna Talk" from his new album My Old, Familiar Friend in stores now. Michigan born Brendan Benson first came into the music scene at the age of 26 with his first album, 1996's One Mississippi. He continued working as a solo artist, releasing three albums of his own while occasionally making appearences on other artists' records until 2005 when he joined Jack White in forming the Raconteurs. Charlotte Gainsbourg "Heaven Can Wait feat. Beck" from her new album Charlotte in stores January 26th, 2010. Charlotte Gainsbourg is better known as an accomplished actress rather than as a musician. But, her singing career has also been quite successful. Gainsbourg started singing professionally around the same time as she began acting at the age of 13. Her debut, Charlotte for Ever, was an album of songs written by her father, well known singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. The songs lead to the inspiration of a film he directed and in which they both starred. Charlotte's done a great deal of work performing on other artists records such as the spoken word introduction to Madonna's "What It Feels Like for a Girl" in 2001 and lending backing vocals to Badly Drawn Boy's 2002 album Have You Fed the Fish? When she was ready to record her second solo album she enlisting Air's Jean-BenoƮt Dunckel and Nicolas Godin to help with her compositions, Jarvis Cocker and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon as lyricists, and Nigel Godrich to produce the album titled 5:55. On this latest release Charlotte asked Beck to produce the album.
The Depreciation Guild "Dream About Me" from their new album In Her Gentle Jaws in stores now. Frontman Kurt Feldman (who would later go on to be a part of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart) teamed up with twin brothers Christoph (who would also be a core member of the Pains) and Anton Hochheim to form the Depreciation Guild in 2005. The band self-released their first full length album, In Her Gentle Jaws. The release has generated a good deal of buzz among fans in the indi scene mainly because the whole album was made available for free download on the band's website. They are definetly a band to watch in 2010!
Editors "Papillon" from their new album In This Light and On This Evening . . . in stores now. Originally dubbed Snowfield, Editors formed in 2003. The group included singer/guitarist Tom Smith, lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz, bassist Russell Leetch, and drummer Ed Lay. At the time all four were music technology students at Britain's Stafford University. They eventually relocated to Birmingham after graduation. Editors' quickly became the darlings of the U.K. music press. Editors have so far released two platinum studio albums, selling over two million copies between them worldwide. The arrival of Made in the Dark in 2007, featured some of the band's most focused grooves and best melodies to date. One Life Stand is Hot Chip's fourth full length release.
Jamie T "The Man's Machine" from his new album Kings and Queens in stores now. Canvas Magazine has described Jamie T as "like the bastard lovechild of Billy Bragg and Mike Skinner doing his best Joe Strummer impression". Jamie first picked up the electric bass before a friend gifted him with a hand-me-down standup acoustic model which eventually became his signiture 4 string bass guitar. While playing solo gigs, Jamie T. began recording his own one-man band tracks his his make shift home studio. Jamie T. got an instant leg up when Damon Albarn chose him to remix the Gorillaz single "Kids with Guns" which eventually lead to him signing to Gorillaz label, Virgin, Jamie T. put together a full-band lineup for live gigs and released his debut album, Panic Prevention, in early 2007. Kings and Queens
King Khan and BBQ Show "Invisible Girl" from their new album Invisible Girl in stores now. King Khan and BBQ Show are a Canadian garage rock duo based out of Montreal, Quebec that mix doo wop, punk, soul, that warps into a raw sound that is defintly their own. The duo is Mark Sultan (BBQ) and Blacksnake (King Khan), both former bandmates in a former Montreal band named Spacesh*ts. Before joining forces, Sultan had started a new band (Les Sexareenos) but eventually went solo in 2002 playing gigs as a one-man band under the name BBQ. In the meantime, Blacksnake had formed King Khan & His Shrines. Soon the former bandmates met up and began writing songs together at Blacksnake's home in Germany leading to King Khan and BBQ Show.
Morrissey "If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look At Me" from his new album Swords in stores now. Morrissey really needs no introduction. As the lead singer of the Smiths, which is considered one of the most important indie bands in Britain during the '80s, Morrissey eventually split off from the band in 1987 torecord his own solo material. His crooning and poetic lyrics have intensly connected him with a large fan base of similarly sensitive, disaffected youth. Morrissey's American fan base eventually grew to a point where he became more popular in the U.S. than in his homeland. Swords is Morrissey's ninth solo release.
Mumford and Sons "Little Lion Man" from their debut album Sigh No More in stores March 9th, 2010. Mumford and Sons are a collective folk band hailing from West London in the UK. I was lucky enough to catch their amazing performance at the South By Southwest music confrence in Austin, TX earlier this past March. They've gotten fairly massive in the UK and I've been anxiously anticipating the US release of their debut album Sigh No More due out in the US in March of 2010. Sigh No More was produced by none other than Markus Dravs who is best known for his work with Arcade Fire's last release Neon Bible and is currently producing Arcade Fire's newest work slated to release sometime in the summer of 2010.
The Soft Pack "Answer To Yourself" from their new album The Soft Pack in stores Febuary 2nd, 2010. The Soft Pack, origonally called The Muslims, are from San Diego, California. They initally changed their name due to "ignorant and racist" comments. After touring with Franz Ferdinand and opening for acts such as The Breeders and Bloc Party, The Soft Pack are set to make a big splash on the music scene in 2010.
Surfer Blood "Floating Vibes" from their new album Astro Coast in stores sometime in early 2010. Surfer Blood are from West Palm Beach Florida. Guitarist/vocalist John Paul Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz had known each other since high school. They soon began playing together and eventually connected with guitarist Thomas Fekete, bassist Brian Black, and percussionist Marcos Marchesani. They officially became Surfer Blood in spring 2009 and began recording and touring almost immediately. After playing shows at the CMJ Music Confrence in NYC this last fall, Surfer Blood has positioned themselves to be one of the most buzzed about new bands of 2010.
Ted Leo And The Pharmacists "Even Heroes Have To Die" from their new album The Brutalist Bricks in stores in early Spring 2010. Ted Leo has been one of the most progressive forces in East Coast music scene for the last decade. Ted originally rose to a small degree of fame in the late-'80s in the New York hardcore scene playing with bands like Citizen's Arrest and Animal Crackers. He eventually left New York for Washington, D.C., in 1990, when he founded and fronted a band called Chisel. Chisel eventually broke up and Ted started the Pharmacists essentially as a solo project in 1999. A year later, Leo expanded the project to a full band originally including James Canty on guitar, Jodi V.B. on bass, and Amy Farina on drums. They have released five full-length albums and have toured internationally with great success. Although the band's lineup has changed a bit throughout their career, singer/guitarist Ted Leo has remained the band's main songwriter, creative force, and only constant member. The Brutalist Bricks is the band's sixth full length release.
The Temper Trap "Fader" from their debut album Conditions in stores now. The Temper Trap's from Melbourne, Australia, first rose to local prominence after playing St. Jerome's Laneway Festival in March 2006. They soon released their debut EP that same year, and word of the group's potential soon spread to other continents. Producer Jim Abbiss (who previously produced the Arctic Monkeys' incredibly successful debut) saw similar promise in the Temper Trap's panoramic sound. Sighting their key influences as Radiohead, Prince, Massive Attack and U2, The Temper Trap have positioned themselves with high hopes to stir quite a lot of buzz here in the US.
