This day in music history for December 3rd.

Birthdays:
Mickey Thomas is 60 (Elvin Bishop Band and Jefferson Starship)
Ozzy Osbourne is 61.

On this day in 1965, While performing "The Last Time" in Sacramento, Calif., Keith Richards' guitar accidentally touches his microphone. The resulting electric shock knocks him unconscious. He recovers after seven minutes and the show goes on.
In 1966, NBC-TV broadcast the special, Elvis, sponsored by the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The King was making a comeback.
In 1971, the Montreux Casino in Switzerland burned down during a performance by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Deep Purple was the opening act and wrote about it in their song "Smoke on the Water."
In 1976, Bob Marley was injured after gunman randomly shot into his house in Kingston, Jamaica while he and the Wailers were rehearsing. Marley, his wife Rita, a friend and Wailer manager Don Taylor all suffered minor injuries. The shooters were never caught. Marley and the band performed two nights later.
In 1979, eleven people were killed in a crush of fans at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum, where the Who was performing. Dozens of others were injured.
In 1980, Annie Leibovitz photographs John Lennon and Yoko Ono at their Dakota apartment in New York.
In 1998, Coolio was found guilty of stealing clothes from a boutique in Stuttgart, Germany, and punching the boutique owner. He was fined $30,000 dollars.
In 2002, Bono and friends launched a "talking tour" through the heartland of America in Lincoln, Nebraska on World Aids Day. The two-week bus tour continued via Omaha, Iowa City, Dubuque, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Nashville, with formal and informal stops in smaller communities along the way.

History Highlight:
On this day in 1976, Pink Floyd released a 40-foot helium-filled pig at
Battersea Power Station in England so they could photograph it for
their "Animals" album cover. The pig broke loose, and authorities
had to alert pilots to watch for a flying pig. We pay tribute to the day that pigs flew with Pink Floyd "Pigs on the Wing Part 1."

Random Vinyl 11/30-12/4

Bill DeVille was on the air with me for a few days while Steve Seel was on vacation. He brought in some wax to share.
Monday: "Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)" - Pixies - Here Comes Your Man 12" Single
I always loved this one. The slowed down version of Pixies classic tune from a very hard to find 12" single. This version has an almost haunting quality to it .

Tuesday: "Cone Of Silence" - Yo La Tengo - Ride the Tiger
This is a song from the Hoboken, New Jersey band Yo La Tengo's hard to find 1986 debut. The "Cone of Silence" was a recurring joke on the legendary TV show, Get Smart.

Wednesday: "Pumpin' for Jill" - Iggy Pop - Party
Relatively obscure tune from Iggy's 1981 album. About a dude who has a job pumpin gas in New Orleans who has a girfriend named Jill. A little nod to my colleague Jill Riley!

Jim McGuinn spent a few days filling in as well. Here are the "Jim Picks" for the week.
Thursday: Donovan, "Barabajagal" (1969)
This tune, "Atlantis," finds our Scottish friend waxing eloquent about the impact and demise of the great continent of Atlantis in spoken word from, before breaking into an achingly beautiful endless Hey Jude-esque chorus that wraps up the tune. Certainly an unlikely candidate for the charts, but this was actually his last hit, from 1969, and a possible inspiration for Spinal Tap's "little people of Stonehendge."

Friday: Ramsey Lewis, "Mother Nature's Son" (1968)
Pre-dating the Fab Four's own use of that newfangled Moog Synthesizer, cocktail jazz guy Ramsey Lewis used the Moog and some tasty electric piano on his White Album covers album. Weirder than the typical Ramsey Lewis set, it's a delightful detour from the artist most known for being part of "The In Crowd." We played the cover of "Cry Baby Cry."

Thursday 9:30 Coffee Break: Let It Snow

Today's forecast:
Cloudy with scattered snow showers. Highs 25 to 30. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 40 percent.
Tonight
Cloudy. Scattered flurries. Lows around 15. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
Tomorrow:
Cloudy. Scattered flurries. Highs around 25. West winds 10 to 15 mph.

In that case, I would say today's coffee break theme calls for snow songs. Or songs appropriate for the season. Tis the coffee break for the snow songs, fa la la la la, la la, la la.

If Wesley Willis wrote a song about Tiger Woods...

Posted at 7:39 AM on December 3, 2009 by Jim McGuinn (2 Comments)

... the lyrics might look a little like this:

Tiger Woods
You are my favorite golfer and adulterer.
You really rock it out.
You drive harder than a magic kiss.
You whip a panda's face.

Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods got on my nerves.
He schtupped my my girlfriend Rachel in the arm.
He shot up his wife Elie's SUV.
Then He came to my house and beat my butt.

Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods

After Elie smashed my leg, she banged my head.
Then $164 worth of horndogs smashed my lips.
My hands were cheating.
My hands were also sexy

Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods

Rock over London, rock on Chicago.

Thanks to the Wesley Willis Song Generator we blogged about last week here, even though Wesley is kicked off his mortal coil, he lives on in our memory and continues to inspire. And nothing is more inspiring to write a song about this week than Tiger's saga...

Chart Show Top 20 12-03-09

This week it's another fresh chart with 6 new entries! The highest is a real slow burner that sounds like a classic from Jack Penate. The largest jump up the charts might make Julian change his mind, but his band The Strokes have just announced a string of festival dates for next year. The XX were in town this week and did a cool session for us. That might have fuelled their big jump too, I got lots of positive reviews of their sold out show. And if we can still claim Har Mar as ours, four local artists is the largest number ever! What a year it's been!
