That's the topic for today's 9:30 Coffee Break. Notice that all we said was survived (we didn't say that they necessarily prospered). Of course, there are tons of classic rock examples (Journey, anyone?), but we need your help to come up with a broad swath of choices here today. Chime in below, or here. Can't wait for your suggestions.
I know this may not qualify but,
Nirvana (minus Kurt) became the
Foo Fighters and are a success.
And Alice In Chains are back.
Faith No More: they fared better artistically and commercially after Mike Patton joined the band.
Fath no more.
Blind Melon
Grateful Dead
AC/DC
Genesis
You have to do Joy Division / New Order
Pink Floyd: Survived after Syd Barrett.
Pink Floyd lost Roger Waters (as well as Syd)
Alice in Chains
I like the Pink Floyd suggestion. How about something kooky from the early years -- Arnold Layne or Corporal Klegg, perhaps?
Chicago??
And second on AC/DC.
How about the Flamin' Groovies? They released some good stuff after Roy Loney left, "Shake Some Action", for instance...
Velvet Revolver, essentially GnR minus Axle...
Steel Dragon, from the movie Rockstar :-)
INXS, had reality show to get new lead singer.
Wolfmother is the inverse
plz forgive all the 70's and 80's pop but: Van Halen
Ultravox - Midge Ure after John Foxx
Man! can't believe I forgot Black Flag!
Faith No More absolutely. I vote for "Caffeine".
Also, Black Flag. How many vocalists did they go through before Henry Rollins? 3? Plus, they went through at least 6 drummers and 4 bassists.
AC/DC
Van Halen
Fleetwood Mac
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Pink Floyd
Genesis
Alice In Chains
Iron Maiden
Deep Purple
Styx
Motley Crue (come on.. play Dr. Feelgood)
Black Sabbath (Ozzy left..and came back.)
Van Halen
String Cheese Incident (only had the lead singer for one album)
Tears for Fears
The Beach Boys
The Sweet
I'm sorry to post this.. but Blind Melon was mentioned.. they came back.. but they sure as heck didn't "survive" .. no one can replace Shannon Hoon.
Most of Seattle grunge stallwarts Mother Love Bone became Pearl Jam after the death of MLB singer Andy Wood. PJ does a great cover of MLB classic Crown of Thorns.
Morcheeba
The Pogues
Steely Dan
Crack the Sky
Further Seems Forever had a different lead singer for each of their three albums.
