And guess what? He did. It was 20 years ago today that the Berlin Wall fell.
Today for the 9:30 Coffee Break, there's only one topic that seems appropriate: freedom. Obviously, that's a broad topic and there are a lot of directions we can go with this. But as always, we're leaving the creativity to you. Suggest songs about freedom in general, or tunes that feel relevant to this specific historical event in particular. Leave your suggestions below, or here.
Free To Be You and Me
_Freedom_, from Sunday All over the World,
(yeah, more Fripp stuff, but I love it. With his wife on vocals, and if memory still works, Trey Gunn).
it'll never make it on the air, but I had to try, eh?
That is great album, BTW.
"Free Life" by Dan Wilson
"Free" by The Martinis
"Free to Decide" by The Cranberries
"Freedom Isn't Free" from the Team America soundtrack
This period of time is much more in the classic rock vein, so unfortunately all my requests come out of that...
Scorpions - winds of change
Pink Floyd - The trial
Soup dragons - forget the title but "I'm free"
Rage against the machine - track escapes me again... Zach screams about freedom somewhere on that first album - maybe "wake up"?
Nena - 99 Red Balloons
Rage against the machine - FREEDOM
Atmosphere - Free or Dead
Bob Dylan - I shall be free #10
Dave Matthews - Cry Freedom
Phish - Free
Ween - Freedom of 76' -- also Roses are Free
Brother Ali - Freedom aint Free
Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom
Iron and Wine -Freedom Hangs Like Heaven
Sublime - 40 Oz. To Freedom
Trey Anastasio - Love is Freedom
" I'm Free" Soup Dragons
"Freedom" Bodeans
"Freedom" Blues Travelers
"Freedom Song" Luka Bloom
"Free Yourself" Shangoya
Set Me Free -- James Taylor
Freedom - Jimi Hendrix
Chimes Of Freedom - Bob Dylan
Freedom of '76 - Ween
I'm Free - The Who
Free As A Bird - The Beatles
Can't believe no one's posted it yet, but Heroes, by David Bowie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_(David_Bowie_song)
Also, on a more general Freedom level, Freedom by Richie Havens at Woodstock.
Yeah, I'm a sucker for the classics. Sue me.
"Free Life" - Dan Wilson
Also, just about anything by Bob Marley is related to Freedom. "Exodus," maybe?
I can't believe I didn't think of Heroes by David Bowie. Another excellent song and one of my favorites.
Steve Vai "Liberty"
Was released in 1990, the year after the fall
Might have been inspired by the events in Germany,
Some more suggestions from the classic rock milieu...
Tom Petty - Free Fallin' or Free Girl Now
Neil Young - Rockin' in the Free World
I'd also second the Beatles' "Free as a Bird" and the Who's "I'm Free".
Free — Cat Power
Tear Me Down - John Mitchell on the Hedwig & The Angry Inch soundtrack.
History lesson included.
