Today in:
1974 - An impostor posing as Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore borrowed a Porsche and crashed it in Iowa City. He eventually was charged with misrepresentation.
1976 - Rod Stewart started an 8 week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with "Tonight's The Night". It was Rod's second US No.1; it made No.5 in the UK after being banned by many radio stations due to song being about the seduction of a virgin.
1992 - Elton John performed in Mexico for the first time. An estimated 90,000 people attended the concert at a stadium in Mexico City.
History highlight:
Today in 1987, Sonny and Cher reunited for a performance on Late Night with David Letterman, where they sang "I Got You Babe." The couple's divorce in the mid '70s had initially been bitter, but a reconcilation followed and the two became friends again some time after that. How can we pass up an opportunity to play this song, anyway?

It's been a popular source for movie names over the decades: song titles. It seems like it became a particularly common method of naming movies in the '80s, but there are fine examples from other eras too. What are some good ones? Help us think of some and we'll put together a set for today's 9:30 Coffee Break.

Before Grace Slick was in Jefferson Airplane, she was in a band called Great Society with her then husband, Jerry Slick. The Great Society version of "White Rabbit" is a much longer jam and it featured Grace soloing on... oboe?!
Tuesday: "Si Si Senorita"
(Listen to the audio to hear the awesomeness)
Wednesday: Elvis Presley, "A Date With Elvis" (1959)
This is another one of those Japanese pressings (handed down from her mother) that Jill grabbed from her personal collection. The sleeve looks like a cheap photo copy of the "A Date with Elvis" cover. Could this rare gem be worth some money? We enjoyed "Baby, Lets Play House."
Thursday: The Sherbs, "The Skill" (1980)
Here's one from the wacko-obscuro vault: An Australian band that went by the name "Sherbet" from 1970-1979 and then regrouped under the moniker The Sherbs in 1980 with a more poppy, new-wavey sound. Upon playing the title track (the album's only single), Steve was forced to admit this was definitely a case of "I remember this song being so much more awesome than it actually is."
Friday: Utopia, "Oops, Wrong Planet" (1977)
Todd Rundgren's band that began as a prog-rock jam-out experiment took a turn for more concise (although still occasionally spacey) pop hooks on this record, which contained "Love Is The Answer" - a tune later covererd (and made somewhat more famous) by the soft-rock duo England Dan and John Ford Coley. For Steve's money, that pap-pop version can't hold a candle to the original, especially given it's heavily multi-tracked Rundgren vocals.

He's the only artist to have two different songs on the chart and he's done it for 4 weeks. But now with three different songs?!?! He plays at First Ave 11/29.
The Number One remains the same for the fourth week and again it's winning by a large margin. Their show at The Varsity sold out weeks ago, but we'll be giving away tix on air all week and to one lucky winner who votes for The Chart.
Congrats to Ryan from Inver Grove Heights who is going to Dinosaur Jr. next week.

Solid Gold has been building quite a bit of momentum in the last few months. There has been label attention, a couple of sweet festival appearances and non-stop live shows. In the hours before the guys play their second headlining gig at First Avenue, I thought it would be a good time to give you the Solid Gold update...
Of course, they played Rock The Garden for us back in June. Listen to highlights from the festival here
Check out this video of "Who You Gonna Run To?" from their appearance on the local show with David Campbell back in June.
Listen to them on All Things Considered around 5:45 p.m. this evening.
Doors at First Avenue open at 8:00 p.m. Lookbook and The Hood Internet will be lending support tonight.
