(updated below)

For the upcoming 20th anniversary (!) of The Simpsons, the show is looking for suggestions for a new character, who will appear on the anniversary episode which will also include Coldplay. It was the Coldplay angle got NME thinking about the awesome history of the show's cameos by famous musicians - like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul McCartney, Sonic Youth and others (check out NME's slideshow here).

We're highlighting favorite band moments from the show's history for this morning's 9:30 Coffee Break, and we'd love to take your suggestions if you've got your own favorite.

Update: Here are your request we played, after beginning with a short sample from the show itself (The Ramones playing "Happy Birthday" to Mr. Burns):

1) The Rolling Stones, "It's Only Rock N' Roll"
2) Smashing Pumpkins, "Zero"
3) The White Stripes, "The Hardest Button To Button"

Yo La Tengo did a version of the theme song for one episode. so maybe Autumn Sweater would be nice...seasonal, too.

Phish - The episode where Homer becomes a pothead.

Smashing Pumpkins - I think homer went on tour as a freak that got hit by cannonballs.

White Stripes - Bart is a better drummer then meg white.

Aerosmith - The flaming moe's episode. where moe steals homers drink and gets famous.

--thats all I can remember..

Homer singing Steve Miller's "The Joker" in a flashback episode is quite possibly the hardest I've EVER laughed at that show. Not something that's likely to be available in the library, though.

One of the funniest Homer singing moments was when he was singing the flintstones theme while leaving the power plant.. and drives right into a tree while singing about it.

Also when they have a garage sale, and homer is on the top of the tables singing about the products. "Ah Ah Ah, Table 5!" (to the staying alive tune)

OMG how about the Ramones singing "Happy Birthday" to Mr. Burns??? Best quote from the song: "Go to hell you old bastard!"

Homer goes to Rock n' Roll camp-
M. Jagger/Keith Richards, B. Setzer, Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz, I think there's one more.

What about the B-Sharps can we hear some "Baby on Board?"

Spinal Tap

"Good night Springton, there will be no encore"

Blink 182 played when Bart got emancipated and lived in the same building as Tony Hawk. Can't remember which song but i liked the album with "feeling this" because it was purportedly recorded in a hallway for the sound quality.

The Peter Frampton comment made me remember--Homer heckling Bachman-Turner Overdrive to play their hit(s), then "skip to the good part" of "Takin' Care of Business".

I'm having a hard time remembering cameos per se, but here are some of my favorite musical moments...

- Homer singing "When I was seventeen" (I drank some very good beer I purchased with a fake ID. My name was Brian McGee. I stayed up listening to Queen, when I was seventeen)

- Springfield tripping out to "Go Ask Alice" when Homer messes up the hippie juice operation

- "The Waiting" playing while Homer waits to buy a gun

"The Hardest Button to Button"- Bart learns the drums, and mimics the Stripes' video.

Aerosmith was the first musical guest(?) Moe sang with the band, which sounded eerily like Tom Hamilton's original backup vocals. "Hello Saint Louis!" "This is Springfield' "Yeah, whatever."

Paul and Linda McCartney

The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Told (by Krusty?) to change the lyrics to What I Got to "What I'd like, is I'd like to hug and kiss ya" and Flea says "Wow, that's much better"

Sonic Youth- they also did a really cool cover of the Simpson's theme song in that episode.

Smashing Pumpkins on the episode "Homerpalooza" played their song "Zero" I believe.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Happy Birthday Lisa" as done by Michael Jackson...

Oh yeah, how about when the Who plays "Won't Get Fooled Again" to break down the wall of garbage?

how boring. of all the options, you pick bands you usually plan anyway. disappointing.....you're usually more creative.

The episode where Homer becomes a hippie and constantly sings Uptown Girl (I think it is the one where he hooks up with the guys making organic juice or soda - something like that). Love that one.
