This weekend is the annual Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX, this year featuring such giant name marquee acts as Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and indie faves like Andrew Bird, The Avett Brothers and Blitzen Trapper.
For today's 9:30 Coffee Break, though, we thought we'd pay tribute to this very, very musical town from another angle: by taking your requests for bands that actually hail from this fair city.
Willie Nelson - Are You Sure
Spoon - Sister Jack
Or possibly some What Made Milwaukee Famous
I am a recent transplant to Austin (9 months!!) and am so in love with this town - and its many bands. I can't wait for ACL!!!!!
My number one request: Strange Boys. Just fantastic. I'd also love to hear The Sword, recently on tour with Metallica and one of Lars' fave new bands.
How about Volcano, I'm Still Excited. They're originally from Austin.
Bob Schneider
The South Austin Jug Band
Spoon
Can't wait for this weekend!
American Analog Set "The Only One," from the "Know By Heart" album.
AmAnSet is no more, but Andrew Kenny's new band, the Wooden Birds, is very similar. "Anna Paula" from the band's "Magnolia" album is a good choice.
13th floor elevators, Daniel Johnston, Ghostland Observatory
I am headed down to ACL fest tomorrow
Butthole Surfers- "Pepper"
Butthole Surfers, but please not Pepper. maybe Creep in The Cellar? Moving to Florida?
Lived in Austin from 95-2007 (now back in MN!) so have lots of Austin faves. Spoon are the kingpins of course, but don't forget Okkervil River, Shearwater, Knife in the Water (if you play "Watch Your Back" I would be ecstatic), Ghostland Observatory, Big Boys/Poison 13, and hey, even Heartless Bastards live there now.
And yes, American Analog Set!! I knew I would forget many obvious choices...
-Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears: "Bobby Booshay" or "Sugarfoot" ("Humpin'" is good but idk if it's too explicit?)
-Voxtrot (despite their fake Manc accents) - "The Start of Something" or "Soft & Warm" or anything really
-Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (who are here this wkend): "Mexico"
-Spoon: anything
-Wine and Revolution: "I Know"
-Peter and the Wolf: "Safe Travels"
Play some Willie!!
Can't talk about Austin w/o a nod to the vibrant and muy awesome Tejano/Chicano community:
-Don Yojan: "Deja Vu"
-Salena (who was technically from Corpus Christi, but I doubt that'll ever make Coffee Break theme status)
-Los Loney Boys: in the vein of the Beatles do a great cover of Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through"
The Gourds - Something from Dem's Good Beeble
oh yeah, 13th floor elevators for sure. long live Rocky Erikson and the electric jug!
Hope I can just sneak this one in: Austin Lounge Lizards "Old Blevins" from _Small Minds_. You have it somewhere; ask Dale.
Okkervil River : "Lost Coastlines"
Wino Vino!
Keeping Austin Weird exhibit B: Leslie, "The Queen of Austin." This guy is great. You used to be able to just chat w/him, but the last time we saw him he was charging for pics. Favorite combo? Cowboy boots, banana hammock, cheerleader's top and sparkly cowboy hat or tam-o-shanter if he's feeling saucy. Oh, yeah.

I did a double take when I heard the Meat Puppets on a set list dedicated to Austin, TX. To my knowledge, Austin never served as a home base for them. I'm 99% certain that they always have been based in Phoenix, AZ. It's forgivable if your average music fan for makes this mistake, but come on, you're paid to do this. Be a little more diligent next time you do a set around a city, especially one as chock full of talent and storied as Austin.
