For all of their successes, The Beatles were not without their fair share of controversy. Secret messages in their songs, unorthodox press events, and ...well, Yoko. What do you think the biggest controversy was for the Fab Four?
The "bed-in" had to be the biggest--John wrote a song about it and said "the way things are going, they're gonna crucify me." Plus it was protesting for peace, which seems to have been (still is?) controversial for some odd reason.
I'd say the fact that people everywhere held Beatles Burnings would make the Bigger than Jesus thing the biggest controversy. I think after that the world got used to them being controversial!
I'd say the Paul is Dead controversy since people are STILL debating it 40 years later!
I'm going with the Paul is Dead Rumour. I was about 8 years old when the whole Paul is Dead rumour swept the world and still remember how creepy it was to listen to my sisters Beatles albums (especially the ending of Strawberry Fields Forever (I buried Paul??) and Revolution #9) and also see paul's black carnation in Magical Mystery Tour. I've always wondered if those were put in there on purpose just to play a joke on the obsessed fans who really believed everything had some sort of symbolic value.
People may still be debating if Paul is the Walrus, but Maca and Yoko are certainly STILL embroiled in controversy. She is the single biggest factor in the dissolution of the Beatles. Think of a group of four blokes who had been a group for that long and here she came in and wanted to be treated as an equal? Not just listened to but a full voice in the decisions. Also, in the 18 months that John and Yoko were separated, John and Paul were considering writing again, according to John's GF of the time. Once he got back with Yoko those talks faded. PLus her music and art sucks.
I disagree with Jake. The Beatles had been a band since their teenage years to 30 years old. In that long span, they grew up, got married and had kids. It was only natural that they grew tired of being Beatles and wanted to explore in different directions.
My vote is with the Jesus comment as no other event inspired such anomosity towards the band.
Defnitely Yoko, its the controversy that people still seriously debate to this day. Probably one of the most polarising debates among Beatles fans.
The bigger than Jesus comment got John killed.
'nuff said. End of discussion.
