You know it, you love it. It's ridiculous. The sound of 80s electronic drums, and specifically, those tom fills. Think every other song from the Top Gun soundtrack.
Well that cheesy percussive sound is what we're celebrating today on the 9:30 Coffee Break. Do-da-doom-doom-doom ...
Update: Today's set wound up being by no means a definitive set. But the tracks we played, culled from your requests:
1) Datarock, "Give It Up" (an example of a new song with that 80s drum sound)
2) Orchestral Maneuvers In the Dark, "Tesla Girls"
3) Jan Hammer, "Miami Vice Theme"
4) Cocteau Twins, "Lorelei"
Tiffany- I Think We're Alone Now!!! =)
Sure as kilimanjaro rises like olympus above the serengeti, it's gotta be "Africa" by Toto. Oh yeah. Plus, it's got that rad synth instrumental break.
M83's "Saturdays = Youth" album from last year is full of that godawful synth roto tom sound. Everytime I hear it, I think of the "Miami Vice" theme.
Wild Thing - Tone Loc
"Give" by Missing Persons
OR
"Vienna" by Ultravox

Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
The opening fill for "Money for Nothing" was done on accoustic drums. But for some reason, I thought of that first. Maybe it's the video.
Prince and the Revolution had electronic drums, as did Phil Collins.
I can revel in the cheesiness you come up with.
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) - Dead or Alive
Thomas Dolby's Blinded me with science....
