Like many of my generation, Joe Strummer and The Clash influenced me in a multitude of ways: musically, philosophically, artistically, spiritually. I am not a good enough writer to do justice to the legacy of Joe, (who would have turned 57 years old today had he not tragically and suddenly passed away just before Christmas of 2002), so I'll just say "thank you" for everything that I was given and everything I learned.
The Sandinista Project is celebrating Joe's birthday by allowing you to download the entire tribute album for free for one day only. The compilation features tracks from The Smithereens, Camper Van Beethoven, Jon Langford & Sally Timms, Amy Rigby, Katrina Leskanich (Waves), Wreckless Eric, Willie Nile, Matthew Ryan, Stew, Sex Clark Five, Sid Griffin & Coal Porters and more. (If you do decide to purchase it instead of taking advantage of the free download, proceeds benefit two Clash-backed charities.)
So while we're on the subject, what's your favorite song by Joe, either with or without The Clash? I gotta go with the obvious: London Calling.
