Friday Coffee Break: Viernes No Ingles

(updated below with your requests)

It's No English Friday! Make your requests for songs sung in anything but English today for the 9:30 Coffee Break. Why? Why not?

Update:

Wow!!! What a response. Of course, I guess that's not surprising when you come up with a topic as broad and fun as this one. Clearly, we will have to make this one a regular feature - and also narrow down the topic to a different language each time.

Just a handful of your requests (as usual, we only had room for our maximum of six):

1) The Sandpipers, "Enamorado" (Spanish)
2) The Beatles, "Sie Leibt Dich" ("She Loves You" in German)
3) Nena, "99 Luftballoons" (German)
4) Sigur Ros, "Gobbldigook" ("Hopelandic" - a combination of Icelandic and gibberish)
5) Serge Gainsbourg, "Bonnie and Clyde" (French)
6) Bossocucanova feat. Zuco 103, "Samba Da Minha Terra" (Portugese)

Maybe too obvious, but what about La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf?

"Oh Sombra!" by Electrelane

Posted by Karli Nelson | August 28, 2009 8:48 AM

Movits! They have created the perfect sound; blending Swedish future hip hop and Roma Swing Jazz. It is aural energy. It's what Nikola Tesla would be listening to right now.

Song: Haus der Luge
Band: Einsturzende Neubauten
Album: Haus der Luge

According to local legend back home, a good friend of mine taught himself to speak German by repeatedly listening to Neubauten albums whilst reading the translated lyrics.

I never confirmed that bit of information, but I can say that Steven appears to speak excellent German.

Oh --- and this is a fantastic song.

I would really like to hear a French song about American outlaws and lovers:

Bonnie and Clyde -

Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot

I don't understand a word, other than the title. And the video is so very very French!

I would have to make a request for Manu Chao's "Me Gustas Tu"... This song ALWAYS has a way of getting me on my feet dancing.

I would appreciate some dancing right now considering I didn't have to go into work today AND I got to sleep in!

Thank you!

"Mah Nà Mah Nà" written by Piero Umiliani. It originally appeared in the Italian film Sweden: Heaven and Hell, but is best known in English-speaking countries from its use in the first episode of The Muppet Show.

Mille Tendresses

Posted by cari | August 28, 2009 9:22 AM

Zuco 103 plays some amazing Portugues songs, I like their older album Outro Lado, songs Outro Lado or Humana...very jazzy with a "i wish i were dancing at night on a brazilian beach right now" feeling!

Buena Vista Social Club is a classic, and Dos Gardenias is a beautiful song, Chan Chan is probably the most famous song from that movie though.

La Oreja de Von Gogh, 20 de enero - a great upbeat pop Spanish song...they play fun music overall.
