Today In Music History: Give the Polyrhythmic Drummer Some

1941 - Desmond Dekker, Jamaican singer (1969 No.9 single "Israelites") was born. He died in May of 2006.
1962 - The Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records.
1966 - Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton formed Cream. The band only lasted 2 years, leaving behind such hits as "White Room, " and "Sunshine of Your Love."
1981 - Singer songwriter Harry Chapin was killed when a tractor-trailer crashed into the car he was driving, causing his gas tank to explode. He was 38.
1995 - Rapper Queen Latifah was the victim of a car-jacking attempt that went wrong, leaving her bodyguard shot and wounded.
2007 - The White Stripes played their "shortest show ever" at George Street, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Jack White played a single chord accompanied by a bass drum/crash cymbal hit from Meg. Jack then announced, "We have now officially played in every province and territory in Canada." They then left the stage and performed a full show later that night in St John's.

Stewart Copeland (drummer, The Police) is 57 today. In addition to The Police, Copeland has had a quirky solo career on his own over the years, first performing under the alias "Klark Kent" in the late 70s, and later writing soundtracks for movie and television. A long lost gem this morning (from a nearly forgotten movie as well): the song "Don't Box Me In," from the Francis Ford Coppola movie Rumblefish (which starred Matt Dillon, Mickey Roarke and Tom Waits). Stan Ridgeway from Wall of Voodoo sings lead vocals.

Wall of voodoo was awesome....here are two great drummers: Neil Peart of Rush, maybe you can play YYZ or how about my personal friend, Brad Wilk of Rage against the Machine (we went to high school together in L.A.) Could you play "Testify" by RATM? Thanks, Steve...Have a great day!

Ginger Baker

I started listening to Ginger Baker when I dated someone who owned a music repair business and he payed Masters of Reality and BBM. I did not really grow up with Cream other than my parents listening to it.

Then about 10 years later I was over at my neighbors in rural america... my neighbor is a music repair person and drummer and he had JB on video in a demo/training type video.... I thought yes.. check out this neighbor.

He is a two handed drummer!

I am not a music or drumming expert... but I am sure impressed.

My favorite is...
J.B.´s Witchdance

How about John Bonham from led zeppelin? He was extremely talented. He had a very large influence on what we consider contemporary hard rock drumming. The lemon song would be a good example.
