The theme was cat songs for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, tying in to "Rebel Rebel," the 6th Annual David Bowie tribute show happening at First Avenue tonight - a show that raises awareness of no-kill cat shelters. Our own Mary Lucia curates this event, a personal labor of love for her (just like cats, and obviously, animals of all varieties).
The Bowie-cover aspect of the show usually gets most of the attention (and once again, it's a cavalcade of local stars who will be there playing the Bowie tunes, including Jeremy Messersmith, Venus and All The Pretty Horses, Lori Barbero, Chris Pavlich, Liam Watkins of First Communion Afterparty, Marc Perlman, Dave Campbell, Laurie Lindeen and many others), but the feline component doesn't always get as much - so we thought we'd focus on that aspect today.
We tried to represent a good mix of "clear favorite" and "most creative" today. What we played:
1) Stray Cats, "Stray Cat Strut"
2) Rufus Thomas, "Bear Cat"
3) Psapp, "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat"
Yes, Rufus Thomas' "Bear Cat" is a direct response to the song "Hound Dog," right down to ripping off the melody. And in case you didn't recognize it, "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat" is a tune from the Disney movie "The Aristocats."
