And when they do, we call them obsessions. That was the topic of today's 9:30 Coffee Break.
I don't think there's a musical genre better suited to songs about obsession, or just flat-out stalking, than rock n' roll. From Death Cab For Cutie's "I Will Possess Your Heart" to Garbage's "#1 Crush" (to the king of them all, The Police's "Every Breath You Take"), rock seems to be a fine vehicle for paeans to one's unattainable beloved. As usual, we wanted your creative requests. Our favorites:
1) Ray LaMontagne, "Meg White"
2) Ween, "Object"
3) Blondie, "One Way Or Another"
By they way, the reason for today's topic? Yours truly is participating in a little book-reading/author showcase tonight, as part of The Minneapolis Central Library's Talk of the Stacks series. The author is Arthur Phillips, and his book is The Song Is You, a tale of romantic obsession run slightly amok between a middle aged fan and a 20-something indie-rock-chick. Chan Poling will provide music. It's at 7pm, if you'd like to join us!
