Today In Music History: Maybe We Should All Take The Bus Home Today

Posted at 6:47 AM on May 19, 2009 by Steve Seel

Birthdays:

Pete Townshend (The Who) is 64.
Jeffrey Hyman (Joey Ramone) would have been 58 today.
Grace Jones (singer, model) is 57.

1973 - Paul Simon released the single 'Kodachrome' which became a hit in the US, but was banned from airplay in the UK because it contained a brand name.
1973 - Stevie Wonder went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life'.

May 19th seems to be a big day for reckless driving:

1976 - Rolling Stone Keith Richards crashed his car in England after falling asleep at the wheel; marijuana and cocaine were found by the police resulting in another fine for the guitarist.
1980 - Ringo Starr and his future wife Barbara Bach were involved in a car crash less than half a mile from where Marc Bolan was killed; the car was totalled, but Starr and Bach were not seriously injured.
1988 - James Brown was arrested for the fifth time in 12 months, following a car chase near his home; he was charged with assault, resisting arrest and being in charge of illegal weapons, and he was given a 6 year jail sentence.

You may know the name Ohad Benchetrit because of his work with Broken Social Scene, The Hidden Cameras, Feist and others. Earlier this month the multi-instrumentalist released his eponymous solo record going under the moniker of Years. Today on our Song Of The Day podcast you can grab the intrumental tune "The Major Lift" for free. If you're a new subscriber to the Song Of The Day podcast, you'll also receive new music from Art Brut, Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band, Gospel Gossip and Grizzly Bear. Later in the week we'll be featuring Wooden Birds, Iron and Wine and local music from The Evening Rig.

Decemberists kick-off North American tour tonight!

Posted at 9:43 AM on May 19, 2009 by Barb Abney

Tonight The Decemberists will kick-off their North American tour in Los Angeles. They'll play a steady stream of dates through August along with Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3, Andrew Bird, Heartless Bastards, Blind Pilot and Other Lives. I think it is the perfect time to take a look at the how The Decemberists have been featured on our station:

They were the #1 choice of our listeners in the Top 89 of 2006.

Carson Ellis (cover artist for The Decembersists and Colin Meloy's baby-mamma) designed The Current Artist Series Tote Bag exclusively for our listeners as membership gifts.

Back in March, Colin called in for an interview with Steve Seel.

Bill DeVille, Mark Wheat and Mac Wilson reviewed The Hazards Of Love on a past episode of Musicheads.

Of course, they're playing Rock The Garden along with Calexico, Yeasayer and Solid Gold on June 20th.

The Coffee Break: Saint Joey

Posted at 1:06 PM on May 19, 2009 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

Joey Ramone would have been 58 today, as noted in the music history blog entry below. Jill and I felt there was really no reason to do anyting especially clever (or stupid?) for the 9:30 Coffee Break; it just seemed like a good day to solicit your favorite Ramones songs. Of course, they're so short, we could easily play four instead of three. Your favorites:

1) Sheena Is a Punk Rocker
2) Beat On the Brat
3) The KKK Took My Baby Away
4) I Wanna Be Sedated

Thanks!

Lucia Pets, Episode Three: Chicks

Posted at 3:30 PM on May 19, 2009 by Mary Lucia (1 Comments)

So here's the third episode of Lucia Pets from the Wells Fargo Family Farm at the Minnesota Zoo.

Holding a freshly-peeped chick was like cradling a "Puffs Plus" tissue. I've never handled anything so delicate and was grateful there were no "Of Mice and Men" incidents. After staring at it's gumball-sized head popping out of my hands for a few minutes, it got a little science-fictiony. I felt as though I needed to tell this six-hour old chick that I was there in peace.

I do not in anyway endorse buying one for your kids at Easter. Finger lickin' cute.
