Today In Music History: Look Out Below!

Posted at 7:04 AM on April 30, 2009 by Steve Seel

1933 - Willie Nelson is 76.
1943 - Singer Bobby Vee is 66.
1966, The Young Rascals went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Good Lovin'.
1977 - Led Zeppelin broke a new world attendance record at a concert when they played to 76,229 people at a gig at the Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan. The Who held the previous record at the same venue with 75,962 people.
1983 - Michael Jackson started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Beat It',

On this day in 1976, The Who's drummer Keith Moon paid nine cab drivers to block-off both ends of a New York street so he could throw the contents of his hotel room out of the window. Boy, the 70s really were the glory days of this sort of thing, weren't they? And as far as hotel room distruction goes, Keith Moon was probably its patron saint. We would have been remiss to not play something from The Who today in honor of this fine rock n' roll bad-boy behavior, so we played "5:15" from Quardrophenia.

It's nearly impossible to speak the title to this tune!

"Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh" is a track from Say Hi's (formerly known as Say Hi To Your Mom) sixth record, Oohs & Aahs. I find it very hard to say the title, much like Spoon's "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" it has to be sung! Hear for yourself... Go to our Song Of The Day podcast page and grab the song for free. If you're a new subscriber, you will also grab new songs from Metric, Black Blondie, Junior Boys and Camera Obscura. Tomorrow we'll be featuring new local music from Chooglin'.

The Ska's The Limit

That was our topic for today's 9:30 Coffee Break (credit to the great Island Records box set of classic ska recordings for the title). A grey day amidst of series of grey days seemed to call for some sunshine, so we solicitied ska tunes from across the decades, just to put some smiles on our faces. We ended up with one from the early days, one from the late 70s/early 80s 2-tone years, and one from the mid-90s.

1) Desmond Dekker, "Rudi Got Soul"
2) The Specials, "Monkey Man"
3) Rancid, "Time Bomb"

Thanks for the requests everybody! Now don't forget to get your requests in for our daylong marathon of requests tomorrow, Radio Free Current. You can even submit three-song sets.

A musical religious experience?

Jon Jacobsen from Minneapolis picked today's My 3 Songs set because..."After Easter weekend I've been thinking about Jesus quite a bit and these three songs all focus on Jesus, but each one doing it in a very unique way. I think it would be interesting for people to get these 3 songs mentioning Jesus Back-to-Back-to-Back."

Neutral Milk Hotel - "The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. One"
Wilco - "Jesus, etc"
The Hold Steady - "Charlemagne in Sweatpants"

Make your "My 3 Songs" requests here.
