It was on this date in 1969 that the recording of 'The Ballad Of John and Yoko' took place, with just two Beatles, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Paul played bass, drums and piano with John on guitars and lead vocals. The song was banned from many radio stations as being blasphemous. On some stations, the word 'Christ' was edited in backwards to avoid the ban.

Bob Mould's latest record, Life And Times was officially released a week ago. He was in town a couple of weeks ago for a live show at The Varsity. He also dropped by for an in-studio performance/interview and a Theft Of the Dial session, as well. He's mentioned several times how proud he is of the tune "I'm Sorry Baby But You Can't Stand In My Light Any More." Today you can get that tune for free on our Song Of The Day podcast as well as new songs from Kill The Vultures, Gentleman Reg, Wavves and Coconut Records. Later on this week you'll have the opportunity to grab new music from Obits, Royksopp and local music from Man Is Doomed.
Bob Mould will be playing Coachella this weekend. Keep up with everything else bob related on his blog..

This week we're playing a slice of vinyl at 8.50, a single with a story behind it...
"Relax!" was the first single by the band Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1983 and it was such a huge global hit that they never really followed it up. Even though the next single "Two Tribes' also went to #1 in the UK, "Relax!" returned to the #2 spot as if to say, remember there's really only one BIG hit!
It was the first time a BBC DJ had personally banned a song, even though the corporation followed him in a show of support, some of the other DJ's just kept playing it! I always remember the t-shirts too, one of the first and most succesful merchandising of a band and a concept. they were white with huge black letters saying "Frankie says..."
Originally it was just 'relax' but went on to spawn many many copies and riffs, truly a cultural phenomena, just like a great single should be! I've never seen anything like it since.
Celebrate Record Store Day on Saturday...maybe you'll discover something you've never heard or seen before!!
