La La Love You, Frank

Today in Music History:

1937 - Merle Haggard was born.
1966 - The first session of what would become The Beatles album 'Revolver' started in the evening at Abbey Road studios London, with the recording of the basic track of 'Tomorrow Never Knows.'
1968 - Pink Floyd announced founder Syd Barrett had officially left the group. Barrett was suffering from psychiatric disorders compounded by drug use.
2006 - Eminem filed for divorce from his wife Kim less than three months after the couple re-married.

On this day in 1965 Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV was born ... he's known better as Frank Black and/or Black Francis, co-founder and lead singer of The Pixies. It was once said that everyone who heard the Velvet Underground during their heyday formed a band; it's tempting to imagine the Pixies had a similar impact. Kurt Cobain, for example, claimed that Nirvana was just ripping off the Pixies.

To salute Frank, we played The Pixies' "There Goes My Gun," from Doolittle.

Amadou & Mariam released their fifth studio album, Welcome to Mali in the UK in November. Pitchfork's named the tune "Sabali" #15 on their 100 Best Tracks of 2008. The album became available domestically late last month (3/24). Today on our Song Of The Day Podcast page we are giving away a remixed version of the tune "Sabali" for free! This version was remixed by Paul Epworth, who has produced records for Bloc Party, The Futureheads, Babyshambles and Kate Nash to name just a few. Amadou & Mariam will be supporting Coldplay's stateside dates in July. More Amadou & Mariam...
You can still grab free tunes from The Honeydogs, Ben Lee, Maria Taylor and Great Lake Swimmers when you subscribe to our Song Of The Day Podcast.
