Filed under: Theft of the Dial
What a thrill, what a gas, what a treat it was to have Bob Mould take over the DJ chair for another edition of Theft of the Dial. He arrived very excited to play a selection of tunes that kind of encapsulated the entire Bob Mould aesthetic, if you will - almost a snapshot of the trajectory of his own career and evolution of his musical tastes and interests. So, in his words, we traveled from "noise punk to melodic punk to shoegaze," and then onto some more electronic-oriented stuff that represents his affinity for dance music and his club DJ-ing persona as well.
First, we started by playing "I'm Sorry Baby, But You Can't Stand In My Light Anymore" off of Bob's latest CD, Life and Times. Then, Bob took it away. His playlist:
1) No Age - "Minor"
2) ****'ed Up - "Black Albino Bones"
3) Black Strap, "Rough Parade"
4) Phoenix, "1901"
5) Yuksek, "Tonight"
6) Royksopp, "This Must Be It"
Quite a snapshot of the continuum of Bob's extremely varied musical loves. Finally, we wrapped up with one more from Bob's latest, Life and Times, "City Lights."
Our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Bob Mould for coming in and making some awesome radio for all of us on a Friday morning!
Missed it, or wanna here it again? Here's the entire segment, complete with songs:

..or at least think of their tune "Fiber Optic Paramour." The song is taken from The Honeydogs' recently released 10th record, Sunshine Committee and you can get it for free on our Song Of The Day Podcast page. They're playing a MinnEconomy set at The Electric Fetus on Thursday night. They're also playing the Blast Festival in Mound next month along with Soul Asylum. And if that's just NOT enough Adam Levy for you, catch his children's project Bunny Clogs at the same MinnEconomy show and on the 18th at The Cedar Cultural Center.

I am hoping it will be a good batch of 5 random songs today. If anything, it will give you motivation to compile your own 5 from your media player of choice. It's a win-win situation.
The Jesus & Mary Chain - "Taste the Floor"
I am hearing this band mentioned as an influence on every other band releasing music nowadays (don't get me wrong, I am an offender). I understand that many bands owe a great debt to their sound, but do we have to call every band that utilizes fuzz or distortion as "Jesus & Mary Chain-esque"?
The Magnetic Fields - "Boa Constrictor"
Speaking of bands influenced by the Chain, this is a short little metaphor song from the Magnetic Fields that does not sound like the Chain whatsoever. It's also just a minute long, which means I need to type fast.
Wire - "Perspex Icon"
A cut from the band's latest, Object 47, an album which made Steve Seel's top 10 list for 2008.
Okkervil River - "You Can't Hold the Hand of the Rock and Roll Man"
What do we have here? Will Sheff writing a brutally honest tale of how tough it is to be a rock n roller? Imagine that.
Blur - "Ernold Same"
More or less a spoken word piece from the band's Great Escape album.

Michelle Pearson from Champlin picked today's My 3 Songs set because..
"Nothing clever, deep or sophisticated, just 3 songs that beg to be sung out loud in the car with the windows rolled down!"
INXS - "Don't Change"
Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse - "Valerie"
Nick Lowe - "Cruel to be Kind"
