Wayne and Win, In Ten Rounds

Posted at 6:44 AM on March 5, 2009 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

In case you haven't been following the soap opera, here's the synopsis: The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, widely seen as one of rock n' roll's nicer guys, took some nasty swipes at Arcade Fire this week in a quote published by Rolling Stone, saying such things as, "Whenever I've been around them, I've found that they not only treated their crew like s***, they treated the audience like s***. They treated everybody in their vicinity like s***. I thought, 'Who do they think they are?'" Wow.

Now Win Butler of the Arcade Fire has produced a response on the band's website (click on "Win" in the upper left hand corner, and then "Win's scrapbook"), sounding bewildered to say the least. It all seems hugely unfortunate, given the massive collective goodwill both bands have enjoyed from the listening public in the past decade.

Reading the specific remarks by both parties involved, it sounds like a case of mistaken impressions taken to an unfortunate extreme. Let's hope this is revolved soon, rather than escalated.

All I know is that Wayne Coyne took time out to talk with me after Mary's interview with him at the State Fair. In a driving rain. Blowing off his handlers that wanted to whisk him away. He signed my DVD, didn't rush, and it was one of the greatest brush with fame moments I've had. In my opinion, if Wayne says somebody's a dick they're probably a dick. Just saying.
