I'd asked for "happy local tunes" today, in response to a new Gallup poll that came out yesterday ranking Minnesota as the "5th happiest state in the country." (We fall behind Hawaii, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. I know - Wyoming? Really?)
Anyway, your suggestions were wide-ranging and awesome - from Prince and Westerberg to Motion City Soundtrack, The Hang-Ups and Dosh. The winners:
1) Atmosphere, "Sunshine"
2) Best Friends Forever, "Handpocket"
3) Unknown Prophets, "Summertime"
Atmosphere and Unknown Prophets got a landslide of votes. (Does it say anything that MN's happiest music is apparently about summer?)
I lived in Minnesota for 27 + years of my life.. I was recently transplanted to Wyoming. I've got to say, I don't know how Wyoming beat out Minnesota. Becoming a resident of this state was like entering a time warp.
I was in shock when I looked at the poll.
The Current itself should make MN rank # 1. =)
What a great set of songs. I was happy and sunshiny on my drive to work today.
I think a big part of why those 2 songs were such an overwhelming choice was due to the weather yesterday and today, and the fact that it's March and most, if not all of us are ready for some fun in the sun. Even I am done with winter, and I'm the guy who prefers snow removal over lawn mowing!
Although, I should say that when I heard Steve call for the nominations, summer heat instantly popped into my mind. It is an infectiously happy tune!
