Today In Music History, 3-17-09

Posted at 7:00 AM on March 17, 2009 by Steve Seel

1919 - Nat King Cole was born.
1951 - Scott Gorham (guitar, Thin Lizzy) was born.
1957 - Elvis Presley bought the Graceland mansion.
1962 - Clare Grogan (vocals, Altered Images) was born.
1967 - Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) was born.
1968 - The Bee Gees made their US television debut on the Ed Sullivan show.
1972 - Melissa Auf Der Maur (Hole) was born.
1975 - Justin Hawkins (vocals, The Darkness) was born.
2002 - The Soundtrack album O Brother, Where Art Thou? started a two week run at No.1 on the US album chart.

Music History Highlight - It was on this day in 1965 that not one, but two members of The Flaming Lips were born: vocalist Wayne Coyne and bassist Michael Ivins. To commemorate the day, I played one of the less-often heard tracks (but one of my favorite Lips tunes) from The Soft Bulletin: "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate."

The 9:30 Coffee Break - St. Patrick's Day Edition

Posted at 1:28 PM on March 17, 2009 by Steve Seel (2 Comments)

Being that St. Paddy's day is, after all, an American holiday, I thought it'd be fun to solicit requests for American bands featuring Irish ex-pats today. It seems a lot of folks were thinking along the same lines in their ideas.

1) Flogging Molly, "Screaming At the Wailing Wall"
2) Romantica, "Drink the Night Away"
3) Dropkick Murphys, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston"

What's cool is that so many folks requested local faves Romantica, who's frontman is Irish ex-pat Ben Kyle. Plus, it was also correctly noted by some that the local band Valet features the Ben's brother Robin Kyle as lead singer and lyricist.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! Tomorrow: hangover songs ...
