My 3 Songs 03/10/09
There McCarten from Minneapolis picked this set because..
"Like many of MPR's forty-something listeners, I had heard little rap or hip hop before the Current went on air. My only exposure to the genre had been from television, and I didn't particularly care for what I heard there. The Current introduced me to a whole new world of quality music that I would have never discovered otherwise! Here, then, is my "Hip Hop For People Who Hate Hip Hop" M3S submission."
"Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" - Us3
"Give The Drummer Some" - Nickodemus
"Hole In The Bucket" - Spearhead

1963 - Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam) was born.
1966 - Edie Brickell was born.
1971 - Timothy Z. Mosley (Timbaland) was born.
1984 - Van Halen's "Jump" was #1.
1988 - Andy Gibb died.
2000 - Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders singer) was arrested for leading an animal rights protest against Gap.
Today's music history highlight: It was on this date in 1967 that The Monkees held the No.1 position on the US album chart with 'More Of The Monkees.' This inspired me to play some Monkees, for several reasons: first, to continue to wish Peter Tork well, as he announced last week that he's come down with a rare form of cancer (although he says his prognosis is good), second, because this particular Monkees album was the first 12" piece of vinyl I ever owned as a wee lad; and finally, because I shall make it my mission to get the Prefab Four the continued props they deserve and rarely fully get. Let's get them in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame!
Track played: The Monkees, "Not Your Stepping Stone"

Y'know, I really try to stay positive around here, and especially in these posts - since our esteemed Web Editor can't stand it when I seem to be inciting the haytuhs without cause, and I have to say I agree with his feelings on the subject. Still, it's hard to resist mocking such things as Esquire Magazine's "75 Albums Every Man Should Own." I mean, the responses nearly write themselves. If I don't complete my collection with these picks, is my masculinity suspect? Is the goal of such lists to create real men by way of exposure to the supposed good stuff, or to create posers with a shelf-full of "hipness trophies"? Would a list of essential women's picks feature Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan, or is that too obvious? You see the problems here?
But really, I just like imagining the meetings where the Esquire editors sat around and debated the merits of The Clash's Combat Rock over London Calling, yet felt that something as un-mainstream as Luna's Penthouse needed to be included. I see I scored with Ray Charles' Modern Sounds In Country and Western Music and Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom (?), but you'll have to dock me points with Vic Chesnutt's Left To His Own Devices and Bill Callahan's Woke On a Whaleheart. Oh well.
