Anyone who has ever walked down the aisles of Petsmart knows that the pet industry in America is enormous. It seems you can buy everything for your pet, but up until now, the closest we got to music for pets was Jingle Cats. But search no further, because apparently there is even a market for CDs aimed at soothing your dog. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Songs to Make Pets Happy. It's a techno-oriented disc that focuses on the upbeat, while avoiding turn-offs such as rimshots (for dogs traumatized by living in "neighborhoods where there is a lot of gun play") and the word 'no'. You can check out an article about the new disc that includes an interview with the CD's creators.
Our mini dachshund Larry get exposed to quite a bit of music, but two examples jump to mind. One evening, we were out in the car when Black Kids' "I'm Making Eyes at You" came on the Current. There's a high pitched noise at the beginning, and Larry did the adorable head-cock that dachshunds are renowned for. He was also baffled when I listened to Air's Moon Safari recently; he stared at the computer screen in a state of sheer confusion. One of these days, maybe I'll play him the album version of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" to see if he responds to the dog whistle at the end, or see if he barks back at the dogs at the end of Pet Sounds.
What music gets your dog (or other pet) going? I leave that for you to discuss, but not before I leave you with one of my favorite videos on the Internet.

Our First Friday resident DJ ESP has moved this month to the Second Friday...remember everything is changing in 09!! He actually sent it to us last week, digitally, while on tour in Europe. Once again he has put together an airtight set full of icey confessions, with a sting in the tail, makes me feel young again! A local touch on a label that I've long admired out of Germany, kompakt.
Thanks to Dave Campbell for filling in for me, here's the full track list;
1. danton - "confessions" - infine music
2. tomcraft - "when i was sixteen" - great stuff
3. motor (brian black from mpls now living in the uk) - "ice" - kompakt
4. joey beltram - "scorpion" - drumcode
5. nick muir - "airtight" - vapour
