keepin' it real!

Hey all, I'll be sitting in for Barb Abney this morning. Live-blogging is a great opportunity to fill in some background to some of the music we hear, and it also lets me tell the same jokes! Hope you enjoy.

9:07 - Sixpence None the Richer's version of "There She Goes" came out during my freshman year of high school. It was ubiquitous and catchy, and I thought it was a nice follow-up to the ubiquitous and catchy "Kiss Me". I think I was in college when I learned it was a cover all this time.

What are your "cover moments": when you discover that a song you know is actually a cover of someone else?

9:30 - Since I totally just zoned out while talking about this weekend's Clapperclaw Music and Art Festival, I didn't give the full website. You can find out more at http://www.clapperclawfestival.com/

9:33 - Hopefully, playing the New Pornographers' "All the Things That Go to Make Heaven and Earth" will remind me to listen to the new A.C. Newman solo track this afternoon. His new solo release Get Guilty comes out January 20. Consider it my most-anticipated new release of 2009. Listen to the new track before I get the chance, at Stereogum.

9:47 - Heard Gnarls Barkley's "Going On" on the Target Center PA before last night's heartbreaking Timberwolves loss.

10:04 - The Current's Song of the Day today is Joseph Arthur and the Lonely Astronauts' "Faith". Let's find out if JA's songwriting well has gone dry after a year of 4 EPs and this new full-length, Temporary People.

10:12 - The Heavy's "Coleen" features a sample of Al Pacino. Can anyone help me out with what movie it's from?

10:31 - Roy Orbison's "In Dreams", requested by Tammy. I woke up this morning thinking I wanted to play some Roy Orbison, so I'm glad it happened! This song gained notoriety for its appearance in the film Blue Velvet; so notorious, in fact, that my father forbade me from talking about the movie around my mother!

10:42 - I liked Kings of Leon's "Crawl" better 15 years ago when it was called "Cherub Rock".

11:04 - We finally got our cable hooked up at the new apartment on Tuesday; as I was channel-surfing yesterday, I caught a nice show featuring Martha Wainwright live in concert. "You Cheated Me" was her set-closer, and it filled its role perfectly: I was eagerly anticipating it throughout the show.

11:08 - So what do we think of the Decemberists' new "Valerie Plame?" Mixing and matching current events(?) with a Hey Jude-esque coda.

11:25 - Whenever I hear Kanye West's "Flashing Lights" from now, on, I'm going to think of Tony Parker lighting up the T-Wolves for 55 points last night.

11:38 - I'm digging the new album from Department of Eagles, In Ear Park. Consisting of some members of Grizzly Bear, the new record has the whole ambient, Fleet Foxes/Beach House thing going.

11:43 - Bloc Party's Intimacy is the Current's CD of the Week.
