Calexico's amazing show!

There is something about the band Calexico that let's all your worries fade away for a few hours. Their music can transport you to a lonely highway in a vintage convertible with the top down in the sunshine somewhere near the border of Texas, Arizona & Mexico. It's a place I've never been, but feel like I have!

I was a little worried in 2006 when Calexico released the Garden Ruin. I thought moving away from their signature sound which blended country, mariachi, and spaghetti-western and so many other things into a more singer-songwriter oriented style. On the latest album, Carried to Dust, the band has returned to what it does best. It showed at last nights Fine Line show. The show was music to my ears. Their set was loaded with that Calexico sound they've honed and refined for more than a decade. The night was full of those mariachi horns, pedal steel guitar, Joey Burns' desperado vocals, John Convertino's amazing percussion & everything else you LOVE about Calexico!

Highlights included several from Carried to Dust album including, the soulful, "Inspiracion" sung & written by multi-instrumentalist Jacob Valenzuela, & Joey Burns songs like, "Writers Minor Holiday," & "House of Valporaiso" & "Two Silver Tree's." My personal highlight was their spot on cover of "Alone Again or" by Love.

You nailed it Bill! I went with '69 Charger as my muscle car of choice on the fantasy Calexico road trip. Sorry to have missed that show, but I'm glad that are still delivering that out-of-the-Midwest-body experience that made me fall for them a decade ago.

I am bummed about having missed that show. It seems that every time they're in town, I've got a full dance card. Lucky that I got to hang out for the in-studio, though. Friendly guys, very professional. (And BTW, great interview, Bill.)

I, too, am glad to see a return to their signature sound--Garden Ruin wasn't my cup of tea, but the minute I heard "Inspiracíon," I knew I was home again.

Next time, though, I hope they come through town in summer. The sound of Calexico in the middle of Minnesota winter was nearly enough to make this Southwesterner jump a plane home. I had to repeat my Minnesota mantra of all things good: cheese curds, public transportation, The Current ...
