"How could you possibly be sad listening to these songs?" asks Brian DeYoung of St. Paul.
1) Mika, "Grace Kelly"
2) Arcade Fire, "Rebellion (Lies)"
3) MGMT, "Kids"
Nice set Brian. I wonder: does happy and/or carefree music help ameliorate the dourness of life even in scary times like this? When our employers are looking at layoffs and our 401k's are evaporating?
I was talking with Ani DiFranco about this basic subject last week. Specifically, I recalled when the Dirty Dozen Brass Band appeared on A Prairie Home Companion from the State Fair in August of 2005, just as reports were coming in that their homes had been demolished by floodwaters from Hurrican Katrina down in New Orleans. They got up on stage and played joyous, completely life-affirming music. Now that's amazing.
Perhaps I've answered my own question.
