Let's have a rockin' fun time.
The Elected - "Beautiful Rainbow"
This is the side project of Rilo Kiley's Blake Senate. I wish they would let him be a bigger voice in Rilo Kiley; his "Dreamworld" was the highlight of Under the Blacklight.
Bob Mould - "Underneath Days"
I'm not even going to try to count the F-bombs.
Wire - "Mannequin"
One of the highlights (and at 2:37, one of the longer songs) on Wire's debut, Pink Flag.
The New Pornographers - "The Jessica Numbers"
In regard to numbers, pay attention to the main riff of the song -- it beats out 5, 3, 2, and 1 beat, respectively.
The Deaths - "Lemon Lane II"
A local band with "psychedelic" influences that never come off too strong or pretentious. This is a pretty instrumental from their latest, Centralia.
Let's see what today brings:
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World
From MTV Unplugged. I pretty much despised Nirvana, but I love this cover of the Bowie song. It really works well. They did a great job arranging it.
Steely Dan - Peg
I just like listening for Michael McDonald's background vocals on this one.
Run DMC - It's Tricky
Nice My Sharona sample
Jon Hassell & Blue Screen - Sex Goddess
4th World trumpeter and Brian Eno collaborator, Jon Hassell teamed up with a hip/hop/remix crew and created some interesting music. Lots of jazz sampling and atmospherics. I had owned this previously, sold it, and found it had gone out of print. I was lucky enough to have found it a few months ago in Amoeba Records in Berkeley while on vacation.
The Cars - Gimme Some Slack
From "Panorama". Not their best album, but did have a few interesting songs.
ok.
Devo - Gates of Steel
One of my very favorite bands. one of the best songs from probably their most commercially successful album (Freedom of Choice) but probably only their 4th best album.. A man is real/Not made of steel!
Ben Folds - All You Can Eat
A scathing critique of American ugliness. what a song! he says it all. just perfectly.
Massive Attack - Group Four
From arguably their best album, Mezzanine. Can they do it again? 100th window was so disappointing.
The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go
Perfect pop. It doesn't get any better, really
Candy Skins - House at the Top of the Hill
What happened to these guys? I thought they should've gotten more recognition than they did. really strong songs. kind of a britpop Fountains of Wayne without the silliness..
Ben Lee - Nothing Much Happens
The Kooks - You Don't Love Me
Sublime - Smoke Two Joints
Venus Hum - Montana
Beastie Boys - Brass Monkey
