Islands - "Kids Don't Know $#!t"
A more cynical cousin to MGMT, perhaps? My vote for best song title of the year.
Television - "Torn Curtain"
We seem to be on an arty bent today, with this moody closer to Marquee Moon.
Wilco - "Radio Cure"
The Entertainment Weekly review for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot always stuck with me, as it was the first place to point out those records that manifested themselves subliminally. This song seems at first to be under a general haze, but over time, little details begin popping out.
Fountains of Wayne - "Fire in the Canyon"
I brought this song up on last year's Musicheads discussion, and Mark Wheat instantly clutched his head in pain. "That's the WORST song on the album!!" he yelped. I haven't exactly revisited Traffic and Weather a lot in the last year, maybe I'm due.
Electric Six - "Naked Pictures (Of Your Mother)"
The winner for Funniest Parentheses in a Song Title. Only song in history to contain the couplet "I dropped the bomb on Japan/I was a hostage in Iran"
Staring at The Sun - TV On The Radio
I was floored the first time I heard this song. Still amazing!
Time Of The Season - Trip Shakespeare
I bought "Applehead Man" on a whim in Eau Claire when it first came out. I didn't even realize they were a Twin Cities band until I got the record home. Coincidentally, they ended up playing at the Brat Kabin on Water Street a couple weeks later. My friend Dave did sound for the show. Anyway, I had already memorized the whole album by that time and apparently they were psyched to see someone in the crowd singing along to every song. That night they did this song and it was awesome! Matt told some story about it being played at his wedding... The original version has been one of my favorites ever since that show..
Someone's Gonna Break Your Heart - Jill Sobule
Got this one from the library and I haven't listened to it much yet but it sounds pretty good..
A Heart Is A Diamond - Versus
From Secret Swingers. I am more familiar with Dead Leaves, which I love but I think I need to listen to this one more. This is beautiful; a little more refined/grown up. In a good way.
She Sends Kisses - The Wrens
From their "comeback" album. I love the slow build of this song and the singer's (can't think of his name right now) delivery; how he hangs on certain words. The melody is heartbreaking. And to think that Creed became their old label's flagship band after all the Wrens' troubles...The world would be a better place if The Wrens had been the band to get huge...
"Traffic and Weather" is still in heavy rotation in my house. It's an infectious album. Although "Fire In the Canyon" is one of my least faves on that album.
*Spins the wheel*
Ozomatli - Believe
Gotta give props to the old Shufflemaster Tone Lope, for turning me on to Ozomatli. This is from "Street Signs" and has an awesome Middle Eastern/Klezmer vibe.
Gary Numan + Tubeway Army - Replicas
I remember when this came out originally and had a couple of friends that became instant Numan-heads.
Luna - Friendly Advice
Dean and the crew strumming away on two chords for days, but I love the ending as it builds and the "baa baa baa bap ba baa" vocals.
Ray LaMontagne - Three More Days
A great, laid back Stax feel. Ray's raspy vocals are very soulful. Can't wait for the new album to come out in a few weeks
Ringo Starr - Photograph
As a small kid, I loved Ringo, then progressed to George. I loved this song. Co-written by George Harrison and it has become more poignant following his death. It makes me kind of weepy to hear it now.
