Do The Shuffle

Posted at 12:09 PM on September 5, 2008 by Mac Wilson (3 Comments)

So Do the Shuffle went on another hiatus, this one totally inadvertent. With all the fun and chaos of the State Fair and the political conventions, I just plain forgot. Let's jump in and see what comes up this week.

Teenage Fanclub - "Dumb Dumb Dumb"
One of those bands I've never quite been able to fall in love with, even though I feel like I should. This comes from the particularly poppy Howdy!, their first (and last) album on a major label.

The Beach Boys - "Feel Flows"
A highlight from the Beach Boys' grossly undervalued early '70s work. You may recognize it from the closing credits to the film Almost Famous.

The Red Telephone - "September Gurls"
I have no idea who this band is, but this appeared on a Big Star tribute album, appropriately titled A Tribute to Big Star. It's a pretty nice compilation, with Nada Surf doing "Blue Moon" and Longwave doing "Holocaust".

Brian Wilson - "That Lucky Old Sun (Reprise)"
Wilson breaks bold new ground on this concept album about southern California, with songs about love, surfing, and the ocean. Over the course of the album, he has many short interludes with snippets of the old standard "That Lucky Old Sun" with various spoken word pieces. This piece features some beautiful harmonies.

Wire - "On Returning"
Wire's average song length got longer and longer with each album they made, but even on their third album, they deliver this squeaky little pop number, clocking in at 2:06.

Mac,

Teenage Fanclub's first album on a major label was "Bandwagonesque" their classic 2nd album.. "Howdy!" may indeed be their last on a major, though..

Glad to have the shuffle back, mac.

The Beatles - Piggies
Hmmm. RNC..Piggies... Nuff said.

Bathtime - Loop Guru
Don't know much about the group/artist, other than I got the album out of the library and liked their eastern-tinged electronica.

The Supremes - The Happening
Pure 60's pop R&B. I almost wore out my sister's copy of the Best of the Supremes when I was a kid.

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Kiss Them For Me
A long way from her Punk days, but I'm always a sucker for nearly any song with a drone, tabla (real or fake), and sitar (real or fake)

Scritti Politti - Absolute
I thought this song was soooo cutting edge technologically when it came out in 84-85. We hadn't heard synths and drums that big ever! Plus it's catchy as all get out.

i love the shuffle!

Vince Gauraldi - Peppermint Patty

What to say about Mr. Gauraldi... Now i'm not the biggest Peanuts fan, by any means but i love the music. There is this 80's quasi-hardcore band called the Rythm Pigs that do a sweet cover of the Peanuts theme. This song really starts to kick it out at the end!

Dinosaur Jr. - The Wagon

From the first album without Lou Barlow. Murph is only on three songs; this being one of them. He's one of my favorite drummers.. Otherwise this is all J. with a little extra guitar work from Don Flemming. I really love this album all in all, especially Thumb.

Valet - Subject Range

I haven't listened to this album (the glamour is contagious) in ages. I really enjoy his lyrics.

Billie Holiday - I Didn't Know What Time It Was

Aahh... this really is like a time machine, somehow...

The Glove - This Green City

This is a side project of Robert Smith and Steve Severin, bassist for Souxsie and the Banshees and a female vocalist(Landrey) on most songs. It was recorded around the time Smith was a member of the Banshees ("Hyena"/just before "The Top", if i'm not mistaken). This is such a great album. It is a must for any cure or souxsie fan.
