"My 3 Songs" for Tuesday

Posted at 2:20 PM on September 23, 2008 by Steve Seel

Does the Twin Cities music scene have one degree of separation?

Shannon Kelley writes today, "All these bands have something to do with each other. Plus, go Minneapolis!"

1) Halloween Alaska, "Call It Clear"
2) 12 Rods, "Make Out Music"
3) The Bad Plus, "Tom Sawyer"

I guess would could describe this as "One degree of Dave King." Mr. King would be the one constant element between these three bands, serving as the one and only drummer for popsters Halloween Alaska and jazz juggernaut The Bad Plus, and the second and final drummer for the dearly departed local band 12 Rods, taking over the seat from Christopher McGuire. However, 12 Rods keyboardist Ev (Olcott, brother of frontman Ryan Olcott) also went on to found Halloween Alaska with Mr. King after 12 Rods disbanded.

Bonus trivia: Ev also served as the producer for the final CD by local cult-favorite Love-cars ("Thank You For Telling Me What I Already Know"), who's singer, James Diers, went on to sing for Halloween Alaska as well.

Bonus-bonus trivia: The idea for Halloween Alaska was suggested by Mr. King himself, who pitched the idea to his prospective bandmates as "Everything But the Boy."
