Do The Shuffle

Posted at 12:09 PM on September 5, 2008 by Mac Wilson (3 Comments)

So Do the Shuffle went on another hiatus, this one totally inadvertent. With all the fun and chaos of the State Fair and the political conventions, I just plain forgot. Let's jump in and see what comes up this week.

Teenage Fanclub - "Dumb Dumb Dumb"
One of those bands I've never quite been able to fall in love with, even though I feel like I should. This comes from the particularly poppy Howdy!, their first (and last) album on a major label.

The Beach Boys - "Feel Flows"
A highlight from the Beach Boys' grossly undervalued early '70s work. You may recognize it from the closing credits to the film Almost Famous.

The Red Telephone - "September Gurls"
I have no idea who this band is, but this appeared on a Big Star tribute album, appropriately titled A Tribute to Big Star. It's a pretty nice compilation, with Nada Surf doing "Blue Moon" and Longwave doing "Holocaust".

Brian Wilson - "That Lucky Old Sun (Reprise)"
Wilson breaks bold new ground on this concept album about southern California, with songs about love, surfing, and the ocean. Over the course of the album, he has many short interludes with snippets of the old standard "That Lucky Old Sun" with various spoken word pieces. This piece features some beautiful harmonies.

Wire - "On Returning"
Wire's average song length got longer and longer with each album they made, but even on their third album, they deliver this squeaky little pop number, clocking in at 2:06.
