Do the Shuffle

John Vanderslice - "Trance Manual"
The saga of an American journalist's encounter with an Iraqi prostitute. Vanderslice's production really shines through, especially with those beautiful chimes.

The Beatles - "Across the Universe"
I never saw the movie. I've been trying to get my younger sister into the Beatles for years, to no avail, and then the movie comes out and she's hooked. This is the original Phil Spector version, not the Let It Be...Naked or wildlife mixes.

Elvis Costello - "No Action"
The lead track from EC's This Year's Model. "Every time I phone you, I just want to put you down."

The Magnetic Fields - "All I Want to Know"
This fairly pedestrian song is from the Pieces of April soundtrack. Good flick about getting through tough times. Apparently you're never supposed to use store-bought stuffing.

New Order - "Truth"
Appropriately sad song from the band's sad, first album, Movement. You'd sound sad, too, if the lead singer of your old band had just hung himself. But as with all the best New Order songs, there's that flame of hope that still manages to rise above the gloom and grief.

I've got my tix to see Magnetic Fields on October 10th. Looking forward to that show.

Paul Hardcastle - 19
The synth-pop classic from the 80's. I believe this song started the "da-da-da-da-da dance mix-da-da-da-da-dancemix" stuttering sample use.

Brian Eno - I'll Come Running
One of the few vocal tracks from "Another Green World". Featuring 'castanet guitar'

Van Halen - Running With The Devil
The first VH song I learned to play on guitar. Remember when Eddie was the most amazing guitar player on the planet back then? He still is, but, there was no one like him when they came on the scene.

LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
I was there...

Polyphonic Size - Mother's Little Helper
A synth-pop version of the Stone's classic. Done by a Belgian duo. This is my favorite cover of this song. The guy's monotone Franco-English vocal is priceless. I have it on 12" vinyl, and someone hipped me to an MP3 floating around on the net.

Looks like today is "Frick's Synthesizer Shuffle" except for the VH song.

A friend of mine in college lived next to a guy in the dorms who, for like 3 days straigt, ONLY listened to "19" over and over again....

Led Zeppelin - "All My Love"
I love this song. I heard it was written for Robert Plant's son who died in a car accident...

Digitalism - "Zdarlight"
I don't know much about this. It's from some Ultra Electro comp.. kind of hit or miss. good in the background, for sure.

Daniel Lanois - "Telco"
From his latest(i think?) album, Belladonna. Just really beautiful and peaceful. great music-to-lay-on-the-couch-with-the-sun-streaming-through- the-windows-to.

Bauhaus - "God In An Alcove"
I still haven't heard their new/final record. Any good? I really loved these guys back in the day. Most of it totally holds up for me, including this one.

Blake Babies - "Disappear"
From their "reunion" album. I think I just recently had another song from this album on my "Do the Shuffle".. Their record "Sunburn" is one of my all time favorites.
