Steinski was one of the first DJ / producers working with samples layered on top of beats and even foretold the mashups. He's just had a two cd set put out ;
"Retrospective 83-06; What Does It All Mean".
The second cd is a DJ set that he did for the UK radio show 'Solid Steel' which is produced by Coldcut and the guys from the record label Ninja Tunes, who were also hugely influenced by his early work. This set is made up of his first 4 singles.
The first track in the set, "Lesson 1: The Payoff Mix", was created for a contest by record label Tommy Boy. The prize that Steinski and Double Dee won included, according to the liner notes, "one hundred dollars, two Tommy Boy T-shirts, the label's back catalogue and the satisfaction of knowing ten radio stations around the country would be receiving a reel-to-reel of their 'copyright-deficient' track."
The next two tracks are entitled Lessons 2 and 3, and both DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist titled tracks of their own "Lesson 4" in homage to the groundbreaking duo.
Tracks:
1. The Payoff Mix
2. Lesson 2 (James Brown Mix)
3. Lesson 3 (History of Hip Hop)
4. Jazz
5. Voice Mail (Sugar Hill Suite)
