Do The Shuffle

This week's edition of Do The Shuffle will come a little earlier in the day than usual: I'll be heading to Mankato bright and early Friday to be in my friend's wedding this weekend. Here's hoping they don't play the Macarena at the wedding dance.

The Young Knives - "Half Timer"
I'm off the hook for writing something elaborate for this one, which is a short little interlude on the Voices of Animals & Men release.

The National - "Brainy"
Boxer is one of the best albums released this decade, and just about every National fan I've spoken with has really latched onto this song. The first song they talk about is "Brainy", which kind of baffles me, because while it's still a great song, it wasn't an immediate standout. One of the things that initially drew me to this song (and the album) is its approximation of early, pre-drum machine New Order. It reminds me of "Age of Consent" quite a bit. Don't get me going any further on Boxer.

The Crystals - "He's Sure the Boy I Love"
I feel terribly insecure when I listen to this song. I wonder how underwhelming I must have seemed at first to my fiancee. She probably had this vision of a guy who'd whisk her off to his island resort, and she ended up marrying a radio DJ. P.S. I think the Current needs to play more of the Crystals.

Journey - "Don't Stop Believin'"
Haters, leave now. I have my own sentimental memories of this song, but so does everyone else. It's just one of those. This song probably deserves its own episode of Musicheads. I hope it gets played at the wedding dance.

Bruce Springsteen - "Stolen Car"
Great, I got a total downer to close things out. I've always thought this is one of the most haunting depictions of being, well, haunted by something. You want the guy to get away with it, yet at the same time, you can't just let him off the hook. A stolen car as a metaphor for an extramarital affair...now I'm totally bummed.

Journey...gosh.. I hope one of my secret shame songs doesn't show up!!

Brian Eno - The True Wheel
Just added this to the Pod last night. I've always loved this song. Love how he kept repeating the three chords over four bars so that there isn't any true beginning or end to the verse.

Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
Much of the fuss has died down over this band. I've already grown a little bored with them. Still love this song because you gotta admiti it's catchy.

The Three O'Clock - Mrs. Green
Part of the LA Psychedelic revival groups of the 80's. I saw them open for REM in Berkeley in the mid 80's.

Tom Petty - A Higher Place
I've been on a Tom Petty revival in my life lately, after recently having seen the Peter Bogdanovich documentary "Running Down A Dream". I forgot how great a songwriter he really is. And what a great band the Heartebreakers are/were. Plus you can sing "My Sweet Lord" to it during the links between verses.

Diesel - Sausalito Summer Nights
Haters, leave now...

Ahh, Mac. No shame in "Don't Stop Believin'" I love that song. Journey was the first big rock concert I saw. It was at the St. Paul Civic Center. Bryan Adams opened. I went with my parents. Bryan Adams swore and I was embarrassed.. Have you heard Petra Haden's all accapella version of "Don't Stop Believin'"? pretty sweet. Ok here I go..

The Langley Schools Music Project- "Saturday Night"

This is the second song from this album to appear on my shuffle. This time the kids are singing the Bay City Rollers gem. This is actually one of my favorites on this album because it sounds like they are having such a great song. totally gleeful.

Sufjan Stevens- "Belly Button"

Just an interlude really. very funny. just a guy (kid?) in a squeaky voice saying, "One time this kid ate too much food and the food started coming out of his stomach. out of his belly button. There was maggots coming out his belly button", followed by a breathy chuckle...

Louis Armstrong - "On The Sunny Side of The Street"

I got this from my wife's grandfather. He is a musician. How can you not love Louis Armstrong?

Soundgarden - "Hand of God"

Now there's a segue for you! From Screaming Life/Fopp E.P.s pretty rockin'. I really love early Soundgarden. what the !%@$ happened to Chris Cornell?!

Madder Rose - "Swim"

This was a really good band. This is a great song. the b-side on this single is my favorite Madder Rose song. It's called "Why Does Baby Get So High". Heartbreaking. The Blake Babies covered it on their reunion album..
