Do the Shuffle - The Return

Posted at 1:05 PM on July 11, 2008 by Mac Wilson (3 Comments)

After a brief hiatus, I'm pleased to announce the return of Do The Shuffle to the Current Music Blog. However, in the biggest twist since No Way Out, I'll be going through my fiancee's iTunes collection today instead of my own. We've been going through the premarital counseling lately, so I figured this was one more way of getting to know my future wife. This could get interesting.

Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra - "Boccherini: String Quintet In E Major Op. 13/5 - Minuet In A Major"
I vaguely remember this one from a commercial back in the '90s, anyone want to help me out?

Wilco - "I'm Always in Love"
This was one of the first songs of mine I ever gave her! Yes, it's about spousal abuse and infidelity, but I intended it as an example of the power and exuberance that Wilco was capable of, in addition to being a great pop song. I talked about Summerteeth's power on Musicheads a few months back; if you can't make someone fall in love with Wilco after playing them this song, there's no hope for them. My first mix for her, incidentally, was called SUPERHITS! I obsessed over the damn thing, back when mix tapes were still an art. Steve Seel had a nice M3S post about this yesterday.

Evanescence - "My Imaginary"
Back at my college station, just before our spring concert my senior year, the sound guy was playing this album over the PA. Our live music coordinator came up to me and said, "You know, we should really get the guy to turn this off...I don't want the bands to get offended!" We had listened to Fallen three times in a row at that point.

Blur - "Song 2"
About two years ago, my fiancee asked me to put a bunch of my albums on a data disk so she could put them on her computer and familiarize herself with more of my music while she was at work. Blur's 1997 self-titled release was one of them (it's certainly in my top 25 of all time). We hear this one when we go to Wild games; it's kind of a sad irony that Blur's uber-pastiche/tribute of American '90s indie rock got mistaken for a hokey ripoff of the real thing. Blur is so much more than just "Song 2", which I guess makes it all the more ironic that it's the one that came up in Do the Shuffle.

Guster - "Silence"
This one is pretty much what it sounds like.

If you have a 5-song Do the Shuffle, why don't you post it here with your thoughts? Even better, sneak onto the computer of your coworker/spouse/roommate (with permission of course) and try it that way?

Glad to see the shuffle is back, Mac! I was having to get my fix on another forum for awhile!

Don't have access to the Mrs. iPod, right now, but would love to give it a shot. We like a lot of the same stuff, but she does have a few suprises on there.

Mott The Hoople - All The Way From Memphis I was a hug Mott/Ian Hunter fan in the early 80's. This is one of my faves. All The Young Dudes can become tiresome after awhile.

Men Without Hats - Pop Goes The World
Yes, they actually had songs other than "The Safety Dance".

Brian Eno & John Cale - The River
From their "Wrong Way Up" release from 1990-91. Written for the birth of Mr. Eno's 2nd daughter Darla. I realilzed that it was a slowed-down country tune, so I recorded a cover version of it much faster and with the twangy guitars and faux pedal steel. Add a dubious Martin Zellar impersonation on the chorus and it actually works.

Paolo Nutini - New Shoes
I got this from a music mag compilation CD. It's just a very happy, poppy summer song.

The Mountain Goats - This Year
The MGs always remind me of my old buddy Ponce de Leon from the old MPR Current Forum. He loved the MGs and John Darnielle. He probably owns the most complete collection of MGs and Darnielle music and memorabilia of any human. Here's to you Poncie!

First of all I want to say I'm glad to see you brought this back, Mac! I just wish more people would play... Second of all, Frick! I was super psyched to see "Pop Goes The World" pop up on your shuffle. I love that song! it is a shamefully underrated and overlooked song. ok. here goes:

Rank Strangers - Red Square
I got this from my sister for my Bday a few years ago and I love it. Just great straight ahead Midwestern rock. Another in the long list of killer bands of which we Minnesotans should be oh so proud.

Coldplay - A Whisper
I really liked this album (A Rush of Blood to The Head). This song never totally stood out to me, though. but it's good... it's funny though 'cause I have such a hard time listening to them ever since I saw their performance on Austin City Limits a couple of years ago. Chris Martin was so over the top he made Bono look modest. Take it down a notch, ok?

JG EVEREST - Hush Money
Another local song! very nice. I love how the vocals start out kind of timid and unsure and then slowly become more fully fleshed out.

Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice It's Alright
Not much to say, or maybe too much to say about this one. Man... devastating. perfect.

Radiohead - Lucky
We have a chihuahua named lucky. He got hit by a car (going about 30) a few weeks ago and escaped with only a scrape to his wrist. Do dogs have wrists?... Another great song. I got to sing this song with a friend's band at Big V's. I hadn't been on a stage in years and !@#$ed up.. not terribly though. no rehearsal or anything, so...

Wells: yes, Pop Goes the World is a darned good song. And yes, I wish more people would play!

(shhh... The Mrs. is upstairs taking a nap, she left her iPod next to the computer.. let's take it for a spin)

The Mountain Goats - Magpie
she's more of a MG lover than I am. This is from the album after the Sunset Tree

Thievery Corporation - Revolution Solution
This is from one of the Live Current CDs. Normally she's not fan of electronica so this is a surprise for me.

The Church - North, South, East and West
I'm not a big Church fan, but she likes them a lot.

The Holloways - Most Lonely Face
I like the Holloways, but this one is not on myPod.

Stray Cats - Look At That Cadillac
Brian Setzer is a guitar monster. But not on this song. I always loved the Stray Cats
