Mercury Prize shortlist announced

Posted at 4:22 PM on July 23, 2008 by Mac Wilson (1 Comments)

The twelve finalists for this year's Mercury Prize have been announced. The Mercury Prize (presented by Nationwide) is awarded to the best album released in the last year by UK or Irish artists. Klaxons won the award last year for their album Myths of the Near Future. The shortlist for 2008 was announced today; the winner will be named at a gala in September. Who's your pick?

  • Adele, 19
  • British Sea Power, Do You Like Rock Music?
  • Burial, Untrue
  • Elbow, The Seldom Seen Kid
  • Estelle, Shine
  • The Last Shadow Puppets, The Age of the Understatement
  • Laura Marling, Alas, I Cannot Swim
  • Neon Neon, Stainless Style
  • Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Raising Sand
  • Portico Quartet, Knee Deep in the South Sea
  • Radiohead, In Rainbows
  • Rachel Unthank, The Bairns
Canada has the Polaris Prize, the winner of which will also be named this fall. Does anyone else wish the United States did this? (and don't you dare say, 'the Grammys')
