Do The Shuffle

Posted at 12:53 AM on July 18, 2008 by Mac Wilson (3 Comments)

This week's edition of Do The Shuffle will come a little earlier in the day than usual: I'll be heading to Mankato bright and early Friday to be in my friend's wedding this weekend. Here's hoping they don't play the Macarena at the wedding dance.

The Young Knives - "Half Timer"
I'm off the hook for writing something elaborate for this one, which is a short little interlude on the Voices of Animals & Men release.

The National - "Brainy"
Boxer is one of the best albums released this decade, and just about every National fan I've spoken with has really latched onto this song. The first song they talk about is "Brainy", which kind of baffles me, because while it's still a great song, it wasn't an immediate standout. One of the things that initially drew me to this song (and the album) is its approximation of early, pre-drum machine New Order. It reminds me of "Age of Consent" quite a bit. Don't get me going any further on Boxer.

The Crystals - "He's Sure the Boy I Love"
I feel terribly insecure when I listen to this song. I wonder how underwhelming I must have seemed at first to my fiancee. She probably had this vision of a guy who'd whisk her off to his island resort, and she ended up marrying a radio DJ. P.S. I think the Current needs to play more of the Crystals.

Journey - "Don't Stop Believin'"
Haters, leave now. I have my own sentimental memories of this song, but so does everyone else. It's just one of those. This song probably deserves its own episode of Musicheads. I hope it gets played at the wedding dance.

Bruce Springsteen - "Stolen Car"
Great, I got a total downer to close things out. I've always thought this is one of the most haunting depictions of being, well, haunted by something. You want the guy to get away with it, yet at the same time, you can't just let him off the hook. A stolen car as a metaphor for an extramarital affair...now I'm totally bummed.

"My 3 Songs" for Friday

Posted at 3:01 PM on July 18, 2008 by Steve Seel

Rachel Oberg-Hauser writes in today, "We, in the O'Shaughnessy Ticket Office, listen to The Current everyday. These are some of our favorite women artists who have come to the O'Shaughnessy in the last couple of years."

1) The Wailin' Jennys, "Devil's Paintbrush Road"
2) Madeleine Peyroux, "La Vie en Rose"
3) Brandi Carlile, "What Can I Say"

That was a lovely set, Rachel. I'm also always amazed everytime we air any of the songs that Brandi Carlile has performed for us live here on The Current (the version of "What Can I Say" that I played today was one of them), because she always, always nails it -- to the point where it seriously sounds like a meticulously crafted produced performance from a CD. What a consummate artist she is.

Guest DJ Set - 7/18

Posted at 9:08 PM on July 18, 2008 by Bill DeVille

Tonight's Guest DJ Set comes to us courtesy of Kaskade. This is an exclusive mix that Kaskade has done for us. He's playing a show on Saturday, July 19th @ Epic (in the old Quest space) Chuck Love is going to be opening for him going on right at 10:30. He's a local DJ on the same label and has been on the Guest DJ Set too!

This will be the only MN stop on Kaskade's worldwide release tour for his latest album of original tracks, "Strobelite Seduction," an album that debuted at #1 on iTunes Dance and has stayed in the Top 10 since its release in May. The unique thing about Kaskade is he's a DJ and producer, so he actually writes and produces all his own tracks - many of which become #1 hits on the Billboard dance charts. He's also hired to remix hits for huge pop stars such as Britney Spears (Gimme More & Break The Ice), Seal (Amazing), Justin Timberlake (LoveStoned) and many others. The Dirty South remix of Kaskade's original track, "Sorry," was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 and every remix he's done for a pop star has hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Club Play and Hot Radio Play dance charts. You can check out an incredible track called "Beautiful Thing" Kaskade created for a Coca Cola Beijing Olympics campaign . Kaskade's track "I Like The Way" was also featured in the "Sex and the City" movie and on the best selling soundtrack. Check out this Behind The Scenes look at how Kaskade creates his tracks
