Human Fly

Posted at 7:18 AM on July 9, 2008 by Dale Connelly (1 Comments)

People keep climbing the new New York Times building in Manhattan, most recently last night.

It might have something to do with an unusual exterior design feature, a curtain of horizontal ceramic rods described in glowing terms as a "sunscreen," though you can see in this photo from the website "Gothamist" that it also makes an inviting ladder.

The first climber last month was a Frenchman who simply does this sort of thing.
The second was climbing to draw attention to a cause, as was the case last night.
This climber unfurled a banner from the 11th floor, but if you're trying to get publicity do you turn your banner outward so it faces the world, or inward, so it can be read by the New York Times reporters? The second approach might be a quicker way to get the word out.

There was no indication that any of the climbers were hooked up to MP3 players during the tedious process of crawling up the side of a building, but if they were, they might have enjoyed a song we played this morning by an upstate New York band, The Horseflies - "Human Fly".

What's on your playlist while you wait to be arrested at the top of your favorite skyscraper?

"My 3 Songs" for Wednesday

Posted at 12:20 PM on July 9, 2008 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

David Duffy writes today, "We're due on the 10 to 12 year cyclical ska revival schedule." Agreed, David!

1) Toots & The Maytals, "Funky Kingston"
2) Madness, "Nightboat to Cairo"
3) English Beat, "Save It For Later"

Now that was refreshing. Nicely done Mr. Duffy.

Have you submitted your set yet this month? When you do, you'll be automatically entered in a drawing for a $400 gift card from Erik's Bike Shop, through July 30th. What are you waiting for?
