Bonnaroo 002.jpg
Here I am, day two at the Bonnaroo Music Festival down in Manchester, TN. It's hot again, I believe the temperature is around 90 degrees at the moment.
Bonnaroo 005.jpgTo beat the heat, lots of people are taking a splash in the Bonnaroo fountain. I think I might actually stick my head under the fountain today. It looks fun. Water is your friend at Bonnaroo. If you don't stay hydrated, you're probably bound for the medical tent.

MGMT.jpgLast night most folks checked out MGMT, Battles and Vampire weekend. There wasn't a whole lot going on other than that last night.

The crowd was really into MGMT (photo credit Music Allies), especially when they played ''Electric Feel", "Time to Pretend" and "Kids". MGMT sounded really good from where I was standing, "Time to Pretend" didn't sound as polished as the album version. But-- I didn't really expect it to.

Battles 2.jpg
Battles (photo credit Music Allies) was a crowd pleaser, totally appropriate for this festival. The beat of their music is good for light stick dancing... and there was plenty of that.

Bonnaroo 016.jpgToday is the day a lot of people have been looking forward to. There's music going on everywhere! The stages are in full swing. So that means I don't want to sit here anymore... I'll be checking in with Mark Wheat at 4:40 and 5:40pm so stay tuned!
My prediction is I'm really going to enjoy Chris Rock and Metallica tonight.

"My 3 Songs" for Thursday and Friday

Posted at 4:38 PM on June 13, 2008 by Steve Seel

Yes, as often happens, I've gotten behind on my M3S blog-posting during the Membership Drive here on the Big C. So here's both yesterday and today.

For Thursday: Christopher Bauleke writes, "Kinda bummed out right now. Got laid of today, rejected, and finals and kicking my butt. These songs always make me feel better." Dude, it's the least we can do to play your songs.

1) Brandi Carlile, "Halelujah"
2) Johnny Cash, "Hurt"
3) The Beatles, "Octopus's Garden"

Interesting set, Christopher. Two downtempo covers, and then a pick-me-up or pure joy and silliness. Hope your world gets better soon.

For today: Miranda Evans asks the simple question, "Who doesn't love Freddie Mercury?" and offers up two Freddie songs and one from a guy who gets compared to Mr. Mercury quite a lot.

1) Mika, "Grace Kelly"
2) Queen, "Killer Queen"
3) David Bowie w/ Queen, "Under Pressure"

Speaking of "Under Pressure" -- what a timeless and brilliant song. I remember thinking when it first came out, "This song is terrible;" It just seemed to me at the time like the most haphazard, ramshacke bit of sloppily-composed stuff, between it's strange, "pasted-together" sounding sections and bizarre, unserious-sounding "scatting" on Freddie's part. As the years have passed though, my feelings have done a complete 180; that tossed-off nature is part of what makes it so amazing. This is a song that seems to have been written and recorded in a moment of sheer inspirational heat, before either Bowie or Queen had any chance to sculpt any of its compositional elements into something more conventional. Thank God. One of the greatest rock "duets" (if you can call it that) of all time.

Tonight at Bonnaroo

Posted at 6:14 PM on June 13, 2008 by Jill Riley (2 Comments)

As I sit here writing this, I can hear the sweet sounds of Jack White's voice. The Raconteurs are rocking the main stage right now, and I just got done checking in with Mark Wheat on the airwaves. I'm hoping to wolf down a sandwich before I make my way to this evening's shows. I have a dilemma because M.I.A., Rilo Kiley and Willie Nelson are all playing at the same time, on different stages. Since I heard that M.I.A. has canceled her tour because she wants a break, I better get over to see her. That's if it's still on... the big rumor around here today was that she was canceling, but I think people have their facts mixed up! I think I'll split the time between M.I.A. and Willie Nelson! That sounds like a good compromise. I love you Rilo Kiley, but I'm guessing I'll be able to see you around the Twin Cities at some point in the future.

Tonight's main event is Metallica. I don't care how many people around here have an attitude about Metallica, I know it's going to be fun. I've never seen them, I think I'm going to like it. Chris Rock has the stage before they go on. Speaking of comedians, I'm going to see Zach Galifianakis at midnight in the comedy tent. You may remember him as the goofy bearded guy in the movie Out Cold. He's been in some music videos too. Most recently for Kanye West and he had a funny part in a Fiona Apple video a few years ago.

OK, I'm off to put on my comfy shoes and experience more of Bonnaroo!
