The Who - "Love Ain't for Keeping"
I've always liked the way this song is a tranquil little garden among the angst of the rest of Who's Next.
Bon Jovi - "It's My Life"
This is one of those songs I've always associated with my junior year of high school. It has an indomitable spirit that this angsty young man always enjoyed hearing on the radio. Produced by Max Martin, who gained fame by his work with the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.
Big Star - "Turn My Back on the Sun"
Weren't you excited when you heard Big Star was releasing its first album in 25-some years in 2005? I was too, until I heard the entire In Space album... That was a rough autumn for Alex Chilton: his album barely made a dent in the charts, and he had to be rescued by helicopter from his New Orleans home following Hurricane Katrina. I should note that this is a pretty nice little pop song that quotes "Wouldn't It Be Nice".
The Beatles - "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"
I first heard the rough mix on the Anthology (yes, that's correct: I listened to the Anthology before I listened to Sgt. Pepper) and was really intrigued by the organs. The famous story is that George Martin took a bunch of stock organ sounds from the library, snipped them to pieces, tossed them into the air, and spliced them together at random. Because the Beatles have not made any songs available online, I have substituted Eddie Izzard's lovely version from the Across the Universe soundtrack. My sister was on an airplane with Eddie Izzard once.
Yo La Tengo - "Daphnia"
Utterly pointless and plodding track from YLT's 2006, Stephon Marbury-lovin I Am Not Afraid of You.... A while back, I did a blog entry challenging all of you to condense the album down to listenable length; this would be my first track to go. Worthless...no redeeming value whatsoever.
With that, have a great weekend.
Ok.. so i tried but i can't stay away.. First of all i have to say, Mac... maybe you just aren't a Yo La Tengo fan at all. Because i think that song (not track) is quite beautiful.. Basically, any throw-away Yo La song easily trumps any Bon Jovi song ESPECIALLY that piece of crap, "It's My Life". In fact, Bon Jovi's only close to non-crap song is "Livin' on A Prayer" in which they come about a quarter of the way to making a decent Springsteen song, although not as close as Journey made it with "Don't Stop Believing"... ok sorry. here we go.
The Ramones - "I Remember You" Great! and what a great scene in the movie... The Ramones as teen dreams...
Liz Phair - "Flower" Not really a great song. But a better song than a song like this usually gets credit for. Definitely not a novelty song. Although the Pansy Division's total novelty cover of it might just be the better song.
Nirvana - "Rape Me" In Hindsight, one of their best songs. They opened with this song when I saw them at 1st Ave on the "Nevermind" tour, long before "In Utero" came out.. People were going nuts!
My Morning Jacket - "Somebody Cares About the Maestro" one of my favorite bands. but speaking of throw aways... but it was released as a throw away basically. still very nice and relaxing. and of course i love it.
John Lennon - "Give Peace A Chance" yeah it's become a standard and all that. awesome.. what else to say. i understand the importance and i couldn't agree more with the sentiment but i'm not sure i need to hear this again unless it's actually at a protest.
67! The same year I saw Bob for the very first time.
Bon Jovi??? I'm losing faith Mac!
I was out of town for the shuffle. Had a long weekend in San Francisco. Boy, did I miss The Current!!
spinning the iTunes....
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Sweet Caroline... Bom Bom Bahhhh!!
The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows
The best Beatles song ever.
Blur - Parklife
Good old Damon Albarn...
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
My thighs still hurt from the Swing Revival
UB40 - Rat In Mi Kitchen
I'm gonna feast on rat, that's wot I'm-a gonna do
