Travis - "Driftwood"
Pretty song from the band of Scots (but then again, pretty songs is what they do)
The Magnetic Fields - "Three-Way"
The elegant instrumental opener from their new Distortion, released in January.
The Bird and the Bee - "Spark"
It's a shame, because the duo consistently turns out great song after great song, but this is one of the most listless things they've yet released.
Fountains of Wayne - "Fire Island"
I have a convoluted theory that Welcome Interstate Managers would have indeed become a five-and-a-half star album if they had trimmed the last four songs and just wrapped it up with "Fire Island". What do you think?
Tiger Baby - "Chinese Fairytale"
This was quite a discovery. They're a Danish electropop outfit that has recorded some really beautiful stuff. The Imeem tagline is rather amusing, too. Plus, they're one of the cutest image searches out there.
Pentti Oskari Kankaan - "Do Ya think I'm Sexy"
Sung in Finnish, found it somewhere on the wonderful WWW
War - "Me And Baby Brother"
Alex Chilton - "Lovely Day aka Stroke It Noel [Demo version]"
from that great new 2-CD compilation of Ardent Records
Cal Tjader - "Mambo Macumba"
Mambo makes rainy days brighter
Rock City - "Lovely Lady"
more from that Ardent Records collection
Spinning the Pod... hoping for some dreary songs to go with a dreary day... come on, let's hear some Joy Division...
James Brown - Think
well, this one's not dreary. maybe the Pod felt I needed some cheering up.
James Hunter - No Smoke Without Fire
Okay, the Pod is definitely conspiring to make it a "Funk" Friday. Just got this from a MOJO magazine compilation of R&B and Funk.
Beck - Girl
Beck returns to the Shuffle!! And with a sunny, happy song to boot. I'm starting to feel a little less dark. My toes are tapping and I'm starting to crave a daquiri.
Sons and Daughters - Gilt Complex
Just when I was feeling better, S&D come by and sucker punch me with this one.
Queen - Dragon Attack (remixby RAK and Jack Benson)
got my funk face on and dancing now. This is bonus track from "The Game" CD. Now if only I could get a copy of that remix of "Bicycle Race" that DJ Z-Trip did for The Current in 2005. That would be awesome.
Mac, First of all I agree that "Welcome Interstate Managers" could have been trimmed by a few songs... However, I would keep "Bought For A Song", "Supercollider" and "Yours and Mine" and get rid of "Halley's Waitress" ( I think maybe their worst song), "Fire Island" and "Peace and Love". Great great album but I still think Utopia Parkway is the better record. Here we go.
Knapsack - "Shape of The Fear" Blair Shehan's band before The Jealous Sound. Good stuff. I think they were kind of one of those early/mid-nineties bands that was supposed to get huge and it just never happened..
Talk Talk - "I Believe In You" Man! What a song! just takes my breath away every time.
Sparklehorse - "Happy Place" From the Distorted Ghost EP. This song works really well following the Talk Talk song. I think Mark Linkous, like Mark Hollis, is a genius.
Evangelicals - "My Headache" From their debut, So Gone. This is one of my favorites from the album. Sort of a ramshackle psychedelic-type beauty. sort of like early Flaming Lips meets The Dead. but only sort of.
The B-52's - "Give Me Back My Man" Ahh. The B-52's I still haven't heard a note from the new album but i want to.. This one is pretty great. I think my favorite B-52's song is actually "Song For a Future Generation".
