Sly Stone: That Didn't Take Long
Posted at 2:00 PM on April 28, 2008 by Steve Seel (8 Comments)
Just got word that the Sly & The Family Stone concert scheduled for this Friday at First Avenue has been cancelled. Shocking! From the press release:
"Due to scheduling conflicts with some of the members of Sly & The Family Stone, the concert slated for this Friday at First Avenue has been cancelled. The date will not be rescheduled. Refunds at point of purchase."
Scheduling conflicts! Go ahead and take your shots. I feel especially bad for Bill DeVille, who's been pumped for this show for weeks. He even talked about it last week on Musicheads. Well, I don't know if we should be suprised from the notoriously no-show prone Sly. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say, if the show actually went on, "The scheduled cancellation of the Sly and the Family Stone concert has been cancelled."

I guess it was almost too good to be true. I kind of suspected something like this would happen. I agree w/ Mr. Seel.. Scheduling conflicts? Excuse me? Um.. did Mr. Stone have a dentist appointment he forgot to mention when they booked the tour?
My condolences to Mr. DeVille and all the fans that bought tickets. It would have been a once in a lifetime event. Maybe the fans could put their money toward going to see a more reliable band like Guns-N-Roses..... ;)

Quite sure the Vic in Chicago will cancel, as well.
He's finished before he started. His drug problems are apparently still problems.

I consider myself extremely lucky after hearing this news. I was at the House of Blues Anaheim Friday 25 April and although he was 2 hours late and the performance was less than one hour with one mishap after another - he remains the King of Funk!

HAH... so much for "scheduling conflict" with the Minneapolis show Jeff, the Chicago show was just cancelled due to "health issues"
"Sly cancels on Chicago again
Rumors of a comeback by the legendary soul pioneer Sly Stone may be a bit... premature.
The leader of Sly and the Family Stone has canceled the performance schedule for Saturday at the Vic Theatre -- "due to health reasons," according to promoters Jam Productions. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.
Students of musical history will recall that another aborted performance by Sly led to a riot in Grant Park in 1970, a few years before the band leader dropped out of the music scene for good in 1975, ending one of the most extraordinary careers in soul, R&B, rock or pop... that is, at least until he can finally get it together for good for the long-awaited second act"

I have been reading the remarks about the SFS concerts around the MSBs and I have to make a few comments.
Sly Stone missed a lot of concerts in the 1960s and 70s.
Contrast that to The Beatles -- who had ZERO concerts after 1966.
Sly Stone is a STUDIO ARTIST. He created masterworks. A Sly Stone "Concert" -- such as at Woodstock -- is a gift. A masterpiece. It is not something to be expected or consumed like a plate of spaghetti at Mangiano's.
Sly Stone is one of the most underappreciated geniuses of the 20th Century. I am listening right now to Stand! on Rhapsody. I have been listening to it for the past 3 days -- I can't stop listening to it! It's BRILLIANT.
If Picasso, back when he was 60, were to come on a talk show or appear somewhere, would you have expected him to paint a painting for you?
Look Sly Stone should be worshipped like Picasso. Dance to the Music. Listen to the Music. Then see if you have the stature to open your gob and criticize!
