"My 3 Songs" for Wednesday

Posted at 1:52 PM on April 23, 2008 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

Jay Jennings from Philadelphia writes in today, "When I was watching basketball this weekend I kept seeing this annoying Nike commercial that used a Saul Williams song. It made me think: what are the greatest songs that are used in not-so-great commercials? I'm sure this is not an exhaustive list, but these were the first that came to mind. The Of Montreal song is used in an Outback commercial and the New Porno's song is used in a University of Phoenix commercial."

1) Saul Williams, "List of Demands"
2) Of Montreal, "Wraith Pinned to the Mist (and Other Games)"
3) The New Pornographers, "The Bleeding Heart Show"

That's a good question, Jay. I think the Beatles "Revolution" in a Nike ad about fifteen or so years ago was a pretty awful appropriation of a masterpiece. Then there's the similar topic of just "weird song choices" -- the strangest one I've seen recently was Aqueduct's "Dinner Mints" in a Jaguar commercial. Jaguar. Not sure what they were going for there.

Update: Duh, I'm reminded that Barb Abney pointed this out yesterday: Radiohead used in an NBA commercial.

Thanks Jay! Nice set.

This is a good idea for my three songs! I personally freaked out when I saw that ubiquitous Cadillac commercial was using Hum, "Stars".
