Do The Shuffle

Phoenix - "Too Young"
I first heard this on the Lost in Translation soundtrack. It definitely recalls Fleetwood Mac circa 1975.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - "Cut Dead"
Speaking of Lost in Translation... Here's a slower track from Psychocandy, an album I've only recently delved into. Stephin Merritt says that Psychocandy was the last truly innovative pop album.

My Bloody Valentine - "Soon"
This is really getting bizarre. Not only are Psychocandy and Loveless spiritual cousins, Kevin Shields also did the music for...Lost in Translation. A friend of mine (who is a big MBV fan) once described "Soon" as an extended farewell, dropping out of the guitar part during the song's final moments to signify the listener re-entering 'the real world' again.

Radiohead - "A Wolf at the Door"
A twisted fairytale that brings Hail to the Thief to a frightening end. Guitarist Jonny Greenwood wrote the musical backing bed. Even after hearing it dozens of times, it's impossible for me to keep up with Thom Yorke's lyrics.

Aimee Mann - "The Moth"
To say I am looking forward to her new album (out June 3) is an understatement. This one is from her 2002 album Lost in Space, completing our mini-series of animal songs and overarching themes of Lost In-related music.

I'd like to buy a vowel, Pat....

Spins the Pod wheel....

Gary Numan + Tubeway Army - You Are In My Vision
From the "Tubeway Army" release. back when he used to use guitars more than the synths. He just re-released "Replicas" his ground-breaking album and is touring behind it in the UK.

Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns & Money
Probably my favorite Warren Zevon song. featuring the guitar chops of Waddy Wachtel, session musician extraordinaire.

Julian Cope - Beautiful Love
This is a far cry from his "The Teardrop Explodes" days. Pure tasty pop-filled donut.

Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
His hair was perfect. Waddy's on this one too...

LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
i was there...

That's funny, because I just downloaded Excitable Boy last night.

John P. Strohm - "Edison Machine" Quite the rocker from the former Blake Babies guitarist from his album, "Vestavia". I always wished he would get more recognition...

Future Bible Heroes - "Hong Kong Cafe" Another of Stephin Merritt's projects, this one co-led by Cristopher Ewen. A dark, sad song featuring Claudia Gonson as a dying soldier writing to her(his) lover who is waiting at home...

The Walkmen - "It Should Take A While" With the exception of a few flashes of sheer brilliance (can you say "The Rat"?), I can't quite totally get into these guys.

Radiohead - "Lurgee" From Radiohead's warm-up, Pablo Honey. It's one of the high points of the record for me.

Codeine - "3 Angels" The first time I heard the super lame term "Slowcore", it was said by a clerk at Northern Lights in reference to this band, when a friend of mine was buying this CD... I still hate that term (better than sadcore, i guess) and I still love this album (Frigid Stars) especially the devastating "D".
